Bunk Beds Store can add drama and adventure to a child's room. Ms. Keenan adds a shelf to store books, or a reading light in each sleeping nook to make bunk beds more attractive to children.
Many of our kids beds bunks can be converted to two complete twin beds which is ideal if you intend to move your children into their own bedrooms in the near future. Pick from finishes like brushed gray, cream white, and rich walnut.
Ladders and Stairs
When choosing kids beds bunk you can choose to select between stairs or ladders. Ladders are less expensive and easy to install and provide a straightforward means of climbing into the top bed. They are also considered to be safer than stairs, since they have a wider area for children to step on and have a built-in handrail. Ladders usually have grooves in the steps to avoid slips when climbing up and down the bed.
If you like the style and look of stairs, they can be a more elegant option to your bunk bed. They can also be used in rooms with limited space as they do not protrude like ladders. They can be made from wood or metal, and they can match the wide variety of bedroom styles. Some staircases even include integrated storage drawers, which are ideal for adding more space to the bunk bed.
When deciding between a ladder and stairs, you should also consider the age of your child. It is recommended that children less than 6 years old not sleep on the top bunk. Older children who are able to climb vertically may do better with stairs rather than a ladder. Also should you be planning on using your bunk bed as an extra bed for children or adults who have limited mobility stairs are the most suitable option.
A straight staircase that runs along the sides of the bunk requires a minimum of 95" of space on each side. If you don't have that much room, you can opt for a u-shaped stairs that doesn't need as much space but still provides a safe and secure means of accessing the top bunk. Some beds allow you to detach the stairs when not being used. This reduces the footprint of the bed, making it more suited to multi-purpose spaces. You can also find staircases that connect to the ends of the bed, which eliminates the need for a separate handrail, and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails provide children with the confidence and independence to climb into and out of bed on their own. But they must be positioned properly, making sure that there are no gaps or loosening occurs between the guard rails and the bed frame. If you choose to use guard rails, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions and check them frequently for any looseness or holes that could potentially lead to entrapment.
One of the most important safety considerations for bunk beds is to keep them away from electrical devices and other objects that could turn into projectiles if your children play or sleep. Place bunk beds away from windows to avoid an injury to fall risk if your children get up on the upper floor.
It is possible to install a nightlight on the ladder so that it can illuminate the way up and down when your child awakes at the night to go to the bathroom, or wake up due to a storm to leave their room.
Another excellent security feature for bunk beds is a safety net which can be installed on the top of the bunk to prevent children from falling off while they are asleep or playing. This is a great idea for older children who may be more likely to sleep on the top bunk.
The guardrails should be secured to the bunk beds and cannot be removed without tools. The guardrail openings above the mattress base must not be larger than 3.5 inches wide to avoid strangulation or entrapment. Place the wedge block shown on Figure 1 in every opening in the uppermost guardrail member and over the mattress foundation. Then apply a 33-lbf (147-N) force in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the large end of the block, and maintain it for a period of 1 minute.
It is a good idea to inform your children to not hang any objects on the guardrail or ladder for example, belts, clothing, and sporting equipment. Instead you should make use of a rack for clothes to stop these objects from becoming a strangulation hazard for your child. Be sure that not more than one child can sleep on the top bunk. This can lead to an unsafe imbalance and fall.
Mattresses
When choosing a mattress for bunk beds, think about your child's size and age. A bunk mattress will last for at least eight years, or until siblings do not share a bedroom So, you'll want to select a mattress designed to adapt to the needs of your child, while providing sufficient support as they grow older.
Bunk mattress sizes are usually full-size or twin, and there are plenty of alternatives that will be suitable for either. If your child has asthma or allergies, opt for an allergy-free mattress that has an anti-dust barrier and a moisture-wicking cover. Kids are likely to experience a lot of accidents and spills, which is why a mattress with an antimicrobial layer will keep the foam safe from harmful bacteria and germs.
Another important consideration is the feel of your mattress. Children weigh less than adults, so they need a mattress that feels firm, but also comfortable. Many latex and hybrid mattresses have a firm side and a soft side to accommodate the needs of both children and adults.
Memory foam mattresses can work well for kids, but they're not the first choice as they can retain heat and could be too harsh on young spines. Think about a hybrid or a latex mattress instead, which offer solid support and cooling infusions to ensure that your child or guest sleeping cool and comfortable.
Low-profile mattresses are usually the ideal choice for bunk beds for children. These are designed to be thinner than regular mattresses and to increase the height of the safety rails for the top bunk. They eliminate "filler" material to offer top quality and durability with slim lines.
Think about an innerspring model or hybrid that has upper comfort layers which can be removed and replaced as your child develops. These models can provide you with an idea of the durability of the mattress as your child grows. You can also include a mattress skirt or bed pad to stop it from sliding. Some beds have side rails or lip built in to prevent this.
Storage
Bunk beds can be an excellent option to free up space in shared kids rooms. They can also be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing two separate single beds. Many bunks allow to add a trundle, which can be put under the bottom bunk when not in use.
To maximize storage space and space in a room that has bunk beds, consider installing a combination kids bedroom furniture set which includes desks, dressers and/or bookcases. This will let you keep all your child's personal items such as clothing, toys and clothes in one place without cramming them into overstuffed closets or chests. These sets of bedroom furniture are available at a variety of stores. They are safe to use and meet federal standards.
The stacking bunks provide an ideal playground for children and children can transform the spaces below into secret places to play or cozy areas. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked 6 bunks in this room to create the ultimate space for kids that can be used to sleep, play and even twirling superhero capes. The room has bubble walls covered with Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the ultimate escape.
If you are unable to install a staircase to your bunk that is stacked the ladder could be an ideal solution. They are constructed using a combination of Single Socket Tee Flange, Single Socket Tee and 90 Degree Side Outlet Tee fittings. They can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between ladder rungs to make it easier for children to climb. The ladder rungs are also placed flush with the ground, rather than higher to aid in climbing.
The installation of loft beds that can be lifted to just above the floor is another method to maximize space in a bunk bed room. This allows you to slide dressers, desks, or toy chests beneath the beds that are elevated. This is an excellent way to maximize the space in smaller bedrooms, or in large family homes where beds must be capable of accommodating multiple sleepers.
