Portable SOS alarms have evolved rapidly in recent years. They now come in sleek designs and are easier to use than ever.
Some personal alarms link to your mobile phone to contact family and friends in case you need help. These alarms store your nominated contacts' telephone numbers and call the first one automatically if you press the SOS button.
What is a SOS alarm?
A SOS alarm is a personal alarm that has been designed and optimised for people who need help in an emergency. These personal alarms are worn on the body or a keychain, and when the SOS button is pressed they automatically call the emergency services and alert family members.
The way that a SOS alarm works is by saving up to five nominated contacts telephone numbers in the system. When the SOS button is pressed this calls the first name on the list. If no one answers the alarm will continue calling each of the nominated contacts in turn until someone answers. This can be particularly useful for those who live alone and want the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they can quickly and easily contact family and friends in an emergency.
Some SOS alarms also have the ability to share your location with emergency responders, which can be useful if you need to get assistance quickly. This feature can be turned on or off in the Settings app under Safety & Emergency, by tapping Share my location with emergency services.
Some SOS alarms can be configured to send a text message to up to three emergency contacts with a photo and audio recording attached. This is a great feature for people who don’t have the time or battery power to write out a full text message themselves in an emergency. You can enable this by opening the Settings app and scrolling to the bottom of the page under Safety & Emergency.
How does a SOS alarm work?
A mobile medical alert device like the SOS Mobile uses a built-in cellular connection to communicate with an emergency monitoring center. This cellular service is included in the monthly subscription cost. Using the device is simple: press and hold the circular SOS button until you feel it vibrate. This activates a red alarm and sends your GPS location to the emergency operator who will contact you by phone to determine what help is needed.
Personal alarms that call family use a similar system but don't require a subscription to the response centre. These alarms have up to 3 nominated contacts (which could be family, friends or carers) whose phone numbers are saved in the device. When the SOS button is pressed it will automatically ring the first person on the list. If no one answers it will move on to the next. This process continues until one of the contacts answers.
The user will be asked questions to confirm their location and the nature of the emergency, which helps emergency services get prepared for arrival. If you're using an iPhone, you can also enable emergency SOS via satellite. This allows emergency services to immediately see the wearer's location and the names of their emergency contacts, as well as other important health information such as what medications they take.
What are the benefits of a SOS alarm?
A SOS alarm that calls family and friends is a great security measure for people who are worried about being alone. It allows them to quickly contact their loved ones and have them rush over to help them out of an emergency situation. There are plenty of options for these types of devices that connect to a monitoring center and can be used both at home and on the go. Man Down App They come in a variety of forms including pendants and wristbands and can be paired with smartwatches for more comprehensive features. Some of these devices even have fall detection and can call for help if a user falls without them needing to push the SOS button.
Another option for SOS alerts is a mobile GPS system that is designed to be used by people on the go. These systems can be paired with smartwatches and will send a message to the appropriate contacts when triggered by an emergency event. They have a battery life that can last up to 72 hours and they will alert the user when it’s time to charge them.
