Eight injured rats received a suspension of OECs in DMEM, and another eight rats received DMEM alone. Locomotor ability scored by the BBB scale, pain sensibility by the plantar algesimetry test, and motor- and somatosensory-evoked potentials by electrophysiological techniques were evaluated for 3 months postsurgery. Finally, all rats were perfused with paraformaldehyde and transverse sections from the spinal cord segment at the lesion site were immunostained against GFAP. Area of the preserved spinal cord parenchyma was measured from the GFAP-immunolabeled cord sections. The BBB score and the amplitude of motor- and somatosensory-evoked potentials were higher in OECs-transplanted rats than in DMEM-injected animals throughout follow-up, whereas the withdrawal response to heat noxious stimulus was lower in OEC- than in DMEM-injected rats. The area of preserved spinal cord was significantly larger in OECs-transplanted rats than in DMEM-injected animals. These results indicate that OECs promote functional and morphological preservation of the spinal cord after photochemical injury.

Donor-Appended N,C-Chelate Organoboron Compounds: Influence of Donor Strength on 27 King's College Circle, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 1A1, Canada.Recently, four-coordinated N,C-chelate organoboron compounds have been found to show many interesting photochemical transformations depending on the nature of their chelating framework. As such, the effect of substitution on the chelate ligand has been well-established and understood, but the impact of the aryl groups attached to the boron atom remains less clear. To investigate the effect of enhanced charge-transfer character, a series of new N,C-chelate organoboron compounds with donor-functionalized aryl groups have been synthesized and characterized using NMR, UV/Vis, and electrochemical methods. These compounds were found to possess bright and tunable charge-transfer luminescence which is dependent on the donor strength of the amino substituent. In addition, some of these compounds undergo photochromic switching, producing dark isomers of various colors. This work establishes that donor-functionalization of the aryl groups in N,C-chelate boron compounds is an effective strategy for tuning both the photophysical and photochemical properties of such systems.

KGaA, Weinheim.Fabrication of optically transparent carbon electrodes by the pyrolysis of photoresist films: approach to single-molecule spectroelectrochemistry.Biological Engineering, and Institute for Combinatorial Discovery, Iowa State This paper describes the preparation, physical and chemical characterization, and performance of carbon-based optically transparent electrodes (C-OTEs) fabricated by the pyrolysis of thin films of photoresist. The electrodes are prepared by spin coating dilute solutions of the positive photoresist AZ 4330 onto quartz substrates. Photo Acid Generator of these samples at 1000 degrees C in a reducing atmosphere yields optically transparent carbon films that have thicknesses ranging between 10 and 80 nm. Sheet resistance measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy were used to determine the physical and chemical properties of the films, and cyclic voltammetry and chronoabsorptometry were employed to delineate the electrochemical and conventional spectroelectrochemical performance of the C-OTEs.

These findings showed that the transparency of this material improves as film thickness decreases, but at the expense of an increase in film resistance. At a wavelength of 500 nm, for example, 13- and 79-nm-thick films have transparencies of 47 and 10% and sheet resistances of 1100 and 210 Omega/ square, respectively. Importantly, adjusting the dilution factor allows the facile and reproducible variation of thickness and transparency.
