Unlock Your Car With Shoelaces
Many cars are now fitted with enhanced security features. Older models still often have post locks which are opened using simple methods.
Certain car manufacturers provide mobile applications that let you unlock your vehicle. Contact your automaker to find out if they have this service for you.
1. Shoelaces
If you are able to use them, shoelaces can be a fantastic tool when you are locked out of your car. If you own a car that have a locking tab mechanism that can be moved vertically up and down, usually near the window, there is an easy method you can employ to unlock your car using nothing more than shoes.
Then tie a slip knot through the middle of two shoelaces. Join both ends and form a loop 3/4 of the way along the shoelaces. Then, slide the knot into the gap between the frame of your car and the door. Then, maneuver the shoelace to hook around the lock mechanism. It may require some trial and trial and error to get the shoelace to be secured. Once it's hooked you are able to pull both ends together to unlock your car.
When using this method, the most important thing to bear in mind is to not scratch or cause damage to your vehicle. If you can successfully use this method to unlock your car, it may help you save the expense of an emergency locksmith or roadside assistance service and get you back on your way in less than a minute.
While this is a fantastic alternative to other more abrasive methods, like using a coat hanger (which could scratch your car) however, it may not always work, especially on the more sophisticated models of cars. If the locking system of your vehicle doesn't respond, you may need to use a screwdriver or a long wooden bar to pry it open.
2. Coat Hanger
Locked out of your car is one of the most frustrating experiences in the modern world. Many people have witnessed their parents or uncles use coat hangers to open a car door when they were young but this could be risky and not work on all cars. The use of coat hangers to open a car door can harm the door's frame and in some states, it is illegal.
You can unlock your car with a simple coathanger made of wire by sliding it between the door and the door frame. The coat hanger is inserted into the gap between the frame and the door. Bend it into a small V to ensure that it has a firm grip on the lock. Then, pull up on the hanger to release the pin or bar that controls the door lock. You may have to move the hook a few times to catch something that can move the lock. But, it isn't a huge effort to lift the bar.
If you're unable to get the coat hanger hook to let go of the control arm, you could try placing it between the window and the weather stripping. It may be necessary to poke around using the hook end of the hanger to locate this spot and once you've located it, you are able to play around with the hanger until you hear your door open. This technique isn't without risk however it can be a great way to gain entry into your vehicle without having to seek professional assistance or a key. If this method doesn't work, you can call a roadside service or locksmith for assistance.
3. Wooden Wedge
Keys can be lost quickly if you erroneously or are careless. If you don't have the means to call AAA roadside assistance or locksmith services, you'll require an emergency solution to unlock your vehicle.
You can make use of anything that can open an opening between your frame and your door. For instance, you can make use of a screwdriver, tennis-balls, or a coat hanger. You may have to squirt air into the gap to get it wide enough to allow your tool to pass through and reach the lock. Be careful not to damage the car.
Many people use a pair of pliers or other tools whenever they lock their keys inside their vehicles, but it's best to use tools that won't scratch or scratch the aluminum trim or paint. Inflatable wedges are ideal for this purpose, and they are available in various sizes that fit inside most doors.
Another alternative is to make use of a long strip of plastic folded in half, such as grocery bags. Slide the strip into the door that is pried open and, once it's to the lock, loop it around the knob and pull it upwards. This method is a bit messy but it's a lot quicker than the coat hanger or screwdriver that can be difficult to control.
If you're a recent car owner, it's likely the lock mechanism isn't in a traditional handle at the outside of the vehicle but is instead located at the top of the window, near the weather stripping. To unlock a vehicle using this kind of lock, you'll have to bend the wire hanger's tip into hook. Slide it into the gap between the window and the door (or weather stripping), until it reaches the switch or lever that locks.
4. Air Wedge
Air wedges, such as this one from HPC are a standard tool for repo and locksmith professionals to make room around the car window frame for easier entry into tools. They also serve as an excellent option to prevent damage to the vehicle when trying to gain access without a key.
An air pump wedge works by sliding between the door and the weather stripping of the door into an area where the correct pressure is applied. A hand pump manual is then used to fill bags that separate the vehicle's door from its window, creating an opening large enough for a car unlocking tool. This makes it easy to break the manual lock mechanism and unlock a car door without using a key.
A good air wedge should have a stiffener that prevents it from bursting when pumped up, and a release valve to avoid over-inflation. It should also come with a tough, non-marring, vinyl bag designed for dozens of uses. These wedges are best when used with a long-reach automobile door unlocking tool or picker that can be put inside the wedge.
It's important to note that one shouldn't try this method of opening the car door. This could result in damage to the vehicle that will require costly repairs at a bodyshop. This is also not a secure method to open your car if you have locked your keys inside.
It is recommended to contact a professional roadside service to help you if you're stuck. They will usually provide a qualified, experienced technician with the right tools to open a vehicle's door without damaging the vehicle. These experts can help with towing and battery replacement among other things.
5. Rod
A rod is a long piece of metal, usually tapered or cylindrical, which is used to support another. It can be used in a car to create a gap in which you can reach your keys and unlock the doors. This technique can be difficult to master, but it's worth trying. If you're lucky, it'll work.
If you're not comfortable opening your car on your own, you could ask a friend to help you. You can also employ an auto locksmith. You can find a locksmith near you by checking the internet or calling. Another option is to get an AAA membership, which includes roadside assistance. This service will send someone to your home or office within a short time and allow them unlock your car with no difficulties.
Many newer vehicles have security features to stop people from breaking in without keys. Older models are easier to get into. You can unlock these vehicles using a coathanger or rod. To do this, you need to separate the coathanger from the hook and bend the straight end to form hook. Slide the hook over the weather strip and into the slit of the door to create a gap. Insert the rod, and then move it to depress the door lock switch or slide it.
Some automakers also provide smartphones with apps that can assist you in the event that you are locked out of your vehicle. For G28 Car Keys , BMW and Hyundai offer the lockout app that lets you to unlock your car with the smartphone screen. OnStar is a program offered by other automakers such as General Motors that can assist you in case your car is locked out. You'll need an iPhone 11 or newer or Apple Watch Series 5 with the most recent version of watchOS and be in Bluetooth range.
