Window Repairs Can Save Homeowners Time and Money
Window repairs can help homeowners save time and money. However, there are times when replacing windows that are old is more cost-effective.
Cracks or holes in windows' glass are usually caused by stray baseballs and projectiles. These are typically easy repairs using the correct tools.
If the window's frame is beginning to decay it is recommended to replace the entire window.
Glass that is cracked or broken
A bad storm or the pebbles from your lawnmowers, or the vase you place down too hard may break the glass of your windows. You can stop these cracks from becoming worse by spending a little extra time and effort. This will reduce the cost of replacing glass.
First, remove the broken glass. Wearing gloves, carefully pry off any molding, trim or glazing putty that keeps the glass in place. You may have to use a utility knife to get rid of any glass pieces that are stuck to the frame.
After removing the glass, clean the surface and the surrounding areas thoroughly. This will stop the adhesive used to hold the new glass from leaking out and causing more damage. Also, you should ensure that the glass you're replacing is a good fit. If the new glass is larger than the previous piece, you'll need to make use of a circular saw or mitersaw to cut it down.
Now that your surface is clean, find a glass adhesive that's specifically designed for glass windows and follow the directions on how to apply it. Then, reinstall the glass into the window sash. Do not bend the glass or moving it during this process. This could cause cracks to grow deeper.
Finally, you can use a product such as Loctite Super Glue Glass to fill in and seal the crack. It is designed to work on all kinds of glass, including tinted ones. Just be aware that this type of fix will not completely cover the crack, therefore it's not the best option for windows that are easily visible from the outside.
RepairMyWindowsAndDoors is epoxy, which is more time-consuming to apply, but will provide the strongest seal and can make your window glass that has been damaged nearly invisible. Before applying epoxy, however you'll need to scrub your glass and the surrounding area thoroughly. You will also need to be prepared to deal with any sudden weather conditions that can cause cracks to grow. If you're not comfortable with these DIY repair techniques or if the glass you have cracked is particularly large or has double-paned It's recommended to call in the professionals for a professional repair.
Sashes that won't slide open
A window that does not stay up for long can be more than a nuisance; it could also be a risk. Single- and double-hung windows come with balancing mechanisms that help keep the sash from sliding up and down within the jambs. However one or several of these mechanisms may be damaged or disconnected. Examine the balance and pivot bar shoe to determine if either or both have been dislodged. You will need to replace the balance bar and pivot shoe if they've become dislodged.
Moisture can cause cycles of expansion and contraction within the frames of sash windows made of timber. This can cause the frame joints to loosen over time and then become stuck. It is possible to repair this issue without having to remove the window if you use a blade to cut the joints of the frame apart. If the wood appears swelling, it's usually caused by missing flashing on the exterior of your home that lets water soak into the frame.
Another common reason for windows that aren't opening is a sash cord snapped. You can try to re-attach the cord by pulling it back (pliers could be helpful) and sliding the sash back to its original position. If the cord has snapped completely, you'll need to replace it.
Paint can also make a window difficult to move. If you notice that the sash channel of double-hung windows is closed with paint it is possible to break the bond by scoring the paint using a knife and then trying to slide it. If this does not work then you'll need to take out the window sash, then cut the seam on both sides between the sash, stop, the parting strip, or jamb (Photo 1).
Sash shoes for single-hung windows can be made of metal or plastic. They have an U shaped slot that locks when the shoe is in the normal position within the sash. To unlock the shoe using a screwdriver and turn the slot to the side using the image 2. Then you can slide the sash up and down and check whether the window functions normally.
Rotting Wood
Wood rot isn't just visually unattractive, but it can be a serious threat to the structural integrity in the area of the home it has infested. The fungus responsible for it feeds on moisture and transforms wood beams, walls, and joists to a wet mucus. The best way to avoid decay is to ensure your home is properly maintained and areas that have exposure to the elements are adequately protected. Even the best of intentions just one missed painting session or clogged gutter, or a minor roof leak to expose window frames or porch columns, as well as other parts of your house to a variety of decay organisms that can quickly eat away at the structure and weaken its strength.
Most wood rots are caused by excessive humidity, which is typically caused by condensation or seepage from rainwater. The latter can occur if a damp-proof course is not installed or damaged or when internal materials such as plaster and drywall become affected by leaky appliances, pipes and fixtures.
The first step to repair the rot is to take off the old material. This is typically done using a prybar, but the combination of hammer and chisel may be necessary for the most difficult spots. After the decayed wood has been removed, the gap has to be filled and sealed. There are a myriad of wood fillers to choose from, and the best product will depend on the amount of work you wish to do, how deep the hole is and how much of the original frame can be preserved.
If the rot has spread out too far for a filler to work, you'll need to replace the damaged component. You can hire a professional to do this or do it yourself. This is a more complicated project that requires a carpentry expert to complete. If you're unsure about your skills at DIY you should seek out an expert.
While repairing wood that has rotted is a possibility however, it's much more effective (and more affordable) to prevent it from happening in the first place. Prevention measures include sealing cracks around windows, scraping and repainting caulk, and installing a drip edge on the roof to prevent water from splattering onto exterior trim. You should also check for signs of excess humidity around your windows and think about a dehumidifier to help keep the levels of moisture in check.
Dirty Seals
Probably the most obvious sign of shrinking window seals is the water that drips down the sides or under a window. Sometimes, it is obvious, but often it is hidden in a wall and harder to find. This can cause soft wood, mould, or even structural damage to your RV. The best method to guard your windows is to keep them clean by performing regular cleaning and inspection checks. Pressing gently against the trim on the seal and visually inspecting can help you identify soft spots before they cause water damage.
Fogged windows can also be an indication of a weak seal. They might not be structurally damaging or cause your electric bills to increase, but they affect the appearance of your RV.
The failure of window seals is largely caused by weather damage, with seals expanding in hot temperatures and shrinking in colder ones. This effect can be reduced by storing your camper under cover and keeping it away from direct sun. A simple car wash can help to keep the salt from damaging the rubber seals on your windows.
Other factors that can cause window seal failure include scrubbing the seals with brushes or washrags that contain cleaning agents that break down the rubber. Seals can become brittle, and more susceptible to cracking. Avoid using harsh cleaners and keep your window seals and sash tracks clean with a clean toothbrush.
Doing these maintenance routines is the least expensive and most efficient method of protecting the windows of your RV. This also gives you the chance to inspect the seals on your windows and make any required repairs.
It's more expensive to have your window seals lubricated or replaced with 303 Protectant spray. However, it's still cheaper than repairing the water damage caused by poor sealing. If you're willing to commit a few hours of work, then this is an easy DIY project that will prolong the lifespan of your RV's windows, and save you money in the end.
