Kids Beds Bunk
Bunk beds can add excitement and drama to a child's room. To make bunk beds more appealing to children Ms. Keenan often includes a ledge to hold books or a reading lamp in each sleeping space.
A lot of our kids' beds bunks can be converted to two twin beds in one, perfect if you plan to move your children to their own bedrooms in the near future. Choose from finishes such as brushed white, gray and rich walnut.
Stairs or Ladders
You can pick between ladders or stairs when it comes to bunk beds for children. Ladders are cheaper and simple to put in, and they provide an easy way to climb into the top bunk. They are also considered to be safer than stairs, since they have a larger surface for children to step on and a built-in handrail. Ladders usually have grooves in the steps to prevent slipping when climbing up and down the bed.
If you like the design and appearance of stairs they could make an elegant addition to your bunk bed. Staircases are also ideal for rooms that are small on space, as they don't extend into the space as ladders do. They can be made from metal or wood and are able to match the wide variety of bedroom styles. Some staircases are even equipped with storage drawers, which are a great way to add more space to the bunk bed.
kids bunk beds to consider when deciding between stairs and a ladder is the age of your child. It is recommended that no one sleeps on the top bunk under the age of 6, older children who are comfortable with vertical climbing might be better off using stairs rather than a ladder. Additionally, if you're planning on using your bunk bed as a guest bed for younger children or adults with mobility issues, stairs are the preferred choice.
A straight staircase on the side of the bed requires 95" of space each side. If you don't have that much space, you could opt for a u-shaped staircase which doesn't require as much space but still offers a secure and safe way to access the top bunk. Some beds come with the option of distancing the stairs when they're not being used, which reduces their footprint and makes them more suited for rooms that can be used in multiple ways. There are also staircases that connect to the bottom of the bed and eliminate the need for a separate handrail and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails let children climb in and out of their beds independently and give them the feeling of independence and security. They must be placed correctly to ensure that there are no gaps or loosening in between the guardrails and the frame of the bed. If you decide to use guard rails, follow the directions of the manufacturer and examine them frequently for any holes or looseness that could potentially lead to the entrapment.
Keep bunk beds out of electrical appliances and other items that could be projectiles while your children are playing or sleeping. Set bunk beds far from windows to avoid the risk of falling when your children climb up on the upper floor.
A safety feature you may think about is a night lighting for the ladder; it will aid in illuminating the path and down in case children awake at night to go to the bathroom or get woken during a storm, and need to make their way out of their rooms safely.
Another excellent safety feature for bunks is a safety net, that can be put up on the top level to keep children from falling down while asleep or playing. This is a great idea particularly for older children who are more likely to sleep on the top bunk.
The guardrails must be secured to the bunk beds and cannot be removed without tools. The openings in the guardrail above the mattress base must not be larger than 3.5 inches wide to avoid strangulation or entrapment. To test this, place the wedge block as shown in Figure 1 into each opening in the lower edge of the topmost member of the guardrail and above the underside of the mattress foundation. Apply 33 lbf (147 N) in a direction that is perpendicular to the plane of the larger edge of the block for a minute.
It is a good idea to tell your children not to hang any items on the guardrail or ladder like belts, clothing, and sports equipment. Instead you should make use of an organized rack to keep the objects from creating a strangulation risk for your child. Be sure that no more than one child sleeps on the top bunk. This could result in a dangerous imbalance and falls.
Mattresses
When choosing a mattress to use for bunk beds, consider the size and age of your child. A bunk mattress should last for at least eight years or until siblings no longer share a bedroom So, you'll want to select a mattress designed to expand with your child while still providing sufficient support as they grow older.
Bunk mattress sizes are typically full-size or twin, and there are a variety of alternatives that will fit either. If your child suffers from allergies or asthma choose an hypoallergenic mattress that has dust mite barriers and a moisture-wicking cover. Mattresses with an antimicrobial coating will protect the foam against harmful bacteria and germs.
The feel of your mattress is also important. Children are typically heavier than adults, and require a mattress which is firm, yet comfortable. kids bunk beds and latex mattresses have an extra firm side as well as a soft side that can accommodate both children's requirements.
Memory foam mattresses can be a great choice for children however they're not our first choice as they can retain heat and could be too difficult on spines of young children. Think about a hybrid or a latex mattress instead, which offer solid support and cooling infusions to ensure your child or guest is sleeping cool and comfortable.
Low-profile mattresses are usually the best choice for bunk beds for children. They are designed to be less bulky than regular mattresses, and to maximize the safety rail height of the top bunk. They eliminate "filler" material to offer premium quality with slim lines.
If your child would like to try a mattress thicker than a regular bed, consider an hybrid or innerspring model with upper comfort layers that can be removed or replaced as your child grows. These models will provide an idea of the mattress's durability as your child grows. You can also include a bed skirt or mattress pad to stop it from sliding. Some beds come with a side rails or a lip built-in to prevent this from happening.
Storage
Bunk beds are an excellent alternative to save space in shared children's rooms. They can also be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing two separate, full-sized single beds. Some bunks offer the option of adding a trundle bed which can be hidden under the bottom bunk when it is not in use.
Consider putting up a kids' bedroom furniture set that includes bookcases, desks, and/or dressers to maximize storage space in a room that has a bunk bed. This will allow you to keep all your child's personal items, clothing and toys in one location without having to cram them into overstuffed closets or chests. These kids bedroom furniture sets are available from a range of retailers and usually meet all federal safety standards.
The stacking bunks provide an opportunity for creativity and children can transform the spaces below into secret spaces for play or cozy spaces. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked 6 bunks in this room to create the ultimate space for kids that can be used for playing, sleeping and even twirling superhero capes. The room is decorated with a bubble wallcovering from Chasing Paper, and the ceiling is painted Benjamin Moore Blue Jean.
If you're unable to construct an stairwell to your bunk beds then a ladder is a good alternative. The ladders are constructed using a single socket Flange, Single Socket Degree Side Outlet Fittings. They can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between ladder rungs. The ladder's rungs are also placed so that they're flush with the ground rather than above it, to make climbing less daunting.
Another method to maximize space in a room that has bunk beds is to put up loft kids beds that can be lowered down to just above the floor. This allows you slide desks, dressers, or toy chests under the elevated beds. This is a great way to maximize the space in smaller bedrooms or large family homes where beds must be capable of accommodating multiple sleepers.
