How to Repair Car Lock Actuator
If your power door lock does not respond when you press the lock button on your key fob, it could be a sign of a malfunctioning actuator. In this instance it is usually lubricating the actuator that will fix the problem.
However, it is best to consult with an experienced car locksmith.
Unlocking the door
If you've locked yourself out of your vehicle, it can be a stressful experience. However, there are some things you can try to do to get inside. If you're a member of AAA or another organization that offers roadside assistance, they'll send a locksmith to help you, but you might also be able back inside using DIY tools and methods. These methods will be most effective on vehicles with power door locks, which can be opened by pressing the lock button on the armrest, or using keys.
This method requires a straightened-out wire hanger that has a hook on one end or a longer, stiff tool that will not bend under pressure. It will need to be long enough to reach the car door handle or the lock button, and it should include a hook on one end to catch the latch inside the door. Also, you will require a tool such as pliers to secure the hanger's end and an extended tweezers to manipulate it.
You'll first have to make a space between the top of the window frame of your car and the body. Then, insert the rod or hook from the hanger into the opening you have created and try to slide or depress the door lock flipper or button using it. With a little luck the door will then open.
If your car comes with a digital lock, then you'll need discover a way to open the doors from inside. You can pull a lever on the inside of the door to open it however, you must first to figure out how to get to it. You can make use of the Slim Jim or another long tool to reach the lever.
In some cases none of the methods above will work, and you'll need to contact an expert locksmith for help. Ask them what they'll charge you before they show up.
Unblocking the Keyhole
If the lock is stuck due to the key was inserted prior to it was fully engaged, try to gently push the pin tumblers back into their correct alignment in the internal cylinder. This may help solve the issue, but pushing too hard can cause more damage. In this situation it is recommended to contact an expert locksmith.
Keep the lock lubricated with graphite spray, or a silicone based product. These products are better than oil based products such as WD-40 which tend to attract dirt and debris. Apply the product on the lock. Insert and turn the key a few times. Then, jiggle the keys in the hole.
Powdered graphite is a different item that you should keep in your toolbox. It works like a dry lubricant. It promotes smooth movement without drawing dirt and grime. It's safe to use with locks that have internal pin tumblers. Rub a few grains of powder inside the lock. This will help to lubricate the lock and eliminate any gunk which may have been accumulating around the keyhole.
It is also important to replace the key frequently to ensure it's in good working order and stop it from becoming stuck over time. This will help it last longer and work more efficiently.
If the key is still not turning freely or jams easily, it could be worn out and requires to be replaced or cut. You can use a file to smooth the sharp points on the teeth of the key to prevent future sticking but this is an activity for an experienced.
If the above suggestions don't work then you can try to remove the key that is stuck by removing the strike plate from door frame. You'll have to sand down the lower lip to create a larger opening in which the key can be inserted. If this isn't working, seek out an expert locksmith who has the tools needed to take apart the locked car door. They will have tools to remove the locking mechanisms and be capable of determining why the lock doesn't work properly.
Unfreezing the Lock
With the Polar Vortex bringing cold temperatures and winter storms locks that are frozen are very common. The good news is that there are easy tricks to defrost the lock, allowing you to unlock your car. The first step is to chip away any large chunks of ice that block your lock's cylinder. To avoid damaging the lock cylinder or door, it is important to take care during this process.
Pouring boiling water on the lock is a popular trick. While this might work at first but it could damage your lock in the long haul and likely re-freeze any moisture that is still inside the lock cylinder. Pouring hot water into the lock cylinder can cause thermal shock that could short out modern electronic components in the lock cylinder and door sensor. You can also damage the car lock or door by using metal or sharp objects.
It is recommended to heat the key with matches or a lighter before putting it into the lock. It is best to heat the key using lighter or a hairdryer to melt the ice coating the lock cylinder. This will make it easier to turn the key and unlock the door. If you are unable to get the key in fully, you can heat it up again and try again. Using a commercial de-icer on your key or spraying the lock with a lubricant can be helpful to get rid of any ice in the lock.
It is a great idea to leave your car parked in the sun and let the sun to melt the lock. It could take a while, but this is an inexpensive and easy solution to a frozen lock. A de-icer bottle in your car for emergencies such as this is also an excellent idea since the chemicals will quickly break down any ice and stop future freezing.
Replacing the Actuator
The actuator is a small motor that powers the lock using a set of gears. It can be activated by the key inside the door or a remote control, keyless entry or a central control. It is a low-power device that will be worn out over time. It could be worn out and create an eerie sound or machine gun sound that will not stop unless the actuator is changed.
Most people can replace the actuator with basic tools and a bit of patience. The steps will vary between automobiles, since manufacturers assemble parts differently. However, the fundamental process remains the same. First remove the battery to prevent electrical issues from occurring during the repair. Remove the door panel in a safe manner from the vehicle. Depending on G28 of your car you may have to remove either the window or the regulator to access the actuator.
When you remove the panel, you can see the actuator attached to the door latch. Usually the bolts holding the actuator in place can be removed with the aid of a screwdriver. The actuator can be removed from its mount. Once the new one is installed, carefully reinstall the connector that goes to the wiring harness. Once that is reconnected connect any rods or cables that are attached to the latch and actuator and then place the door panel back into place.
When the trim panel is in place, you must replace any clips that were removed during removal. Make sure that all screws are re-tightened to prevent rattle or looseness. Reconnect any wires that were disconnected and test the new actuator to see if it functions. If it does, put back in the door panel and trim piece, then connect the battery and run a second test to ensure that the locks are functioning in the way they should. If your doors aren't functioning as they should be it could be time to replace the actuator.
