Taking Advantage of Opponents When Playing Hold'em Poker
It is always easy (seemingly) for most players to play Hold'em poker. The game is easy to learn, and since it is a limit one table game it is also easy to monitor. However, to play Hold'em with any strategy requires one to take chances, take risks, and have courage. It also requires the poker player to have a lot of skill, which can be the most frustrating thing for a player to master.

The player must be able to identify the various stages of the game, the different positions of his opponents, and the kind of hands he is holding. The way the opponent bets, his reaction to the flop and turn, as well as his playing style in the earlier parts of the game, all have a lot to do with the decisions taken by the player in later rounds. The skill of the player in deciding which decisions to take and which to fold on each hand is one of the most important aspects of the game.

One of the skills that a poker player must have is the ability to read the bankroll. The more that a player can tell how much money his opponent has on him/her hands, the more opportunities he has to make a move or to protect his/her money.

Reading the Opponents

Another very important aspect of Hold'em is the ability to read one's opponents. Once the reads have been made, the player must now decide what hands he/she will play with and what cards he/she will play with. If the reads are wrong, one will not be able to protect the money or make a very good hand. Dishonest players will do that on purpose to try and throw the other player off the hand. Think of the bluffing skill in Hold'em as a scale. The more you have to protect your hand, the better you will be. The better you will be at advertising your hand, the less attention you will have on your own hand.

The Hands Need to Be Studied to Gain Knowledge

The winning hand in Stud will be the best hand without everybody having anything. A great hand is one that is well educated. An example would be having a flush in T/7 with a 4 of spades. 95% of the time, this hand will not win. The player should have at least a pair or a two high card. Never headlines in this situation unless a single or a two pair comes to hand. A great hand is one that is protecting a pair or has at least a 3 of a kind. Never go past 9 unless you have the nuts or your money is already in the pot.

Pros have the ability to read other players and have the discipline to make the right plays given the hand they are holding.

Cons easily shift into chasing money when other players make mistakes. An example would be the flush that falls on the river after the flop is checked to the player with the best hand. Not a lot of people would flip their flush, but a player with a lot of guts can take the pot from the high blind.
