Ambulance (DVD) Review tasks
Director Michael Bay has had a tough go of it recently. Between bloated, unrelenting Transformers sequels and mediocre direct-to-video initiatives, it has been onerous for audiences to get their fix of the action specialist's trademark giddy thrills. Thankfully, the person who made Armageddon and Bad Boys returns with Ambulance, a small-scale thriller that gives a satisfying shot of his signature fashion.

In a film that plays like one lengthy, breathless car chase, the movie follows navy veteran Will Sharp (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) as he seeks quick money for his infirm spouse and toddler son. He's recruited by his brother, Danny Sharp (Jake Gyllenhaal), to help with a heist at a downtown Los Angeles financial institution. The two rapidly find themselves ensnared in an escalating sequence of violence and deception.


What makes Ambulance fascinating is the best way it splices collectively action sequences of different styles. The opening automobile chase feels completely genuine, with Bay's trademark high-octane visual fashion on full display: dazzling colours, glossy reverence for flipping vehicles, and the sort of vertiginous joy that comes from overhead drone shots swooping atop skyscrapers as they monitor down a cataclysmic crash in progress.

The modifying staff likewise knows tips on how to pull the audience in and out of every new burst of frenetic vitality, building up suspense and then dropping again to disclose the characters' emotional states. The complete movie has a deranged sense of humor, too, with the occasional scene taking half in like a mash-up of Bong Joon-ho's Okja and Christopher Cross's ballad version of "Saving Private Ryan."

For essentially the most half, Ambulance is free of the sneering self-reference that has marred most of the director's more modern films. Cam, Will's paramedic girlfriend played by Eiza Gonzalez, gets a number of scenes of her own to shine by way of the chaos, but she's not given a lot room to develop as a personality past being his love curiosity..
