Director Ti West, who made the bloody and twisted 2009 horror movie The House Of The Devil, follows that film up this 12 months with Pearl, a prequel that includes one other devilish function for his lead actress, Mia Goth. เคซีรีย์kseries is a startlingly strange, weird, unhappy little factor that may in all probability not be for everybody, but it's also a formidable piece of labor and a strong showcase for Goth's skills.
Set in 1918, because the lethal reverberations of World War I and the even more deadly Spanish Flu are nonetheless being felt, Pearl follows the exploitative and exploited lives of a bunch of women trapped on an isolated farm. Though Pearl's stern German mom (Tandi Wright) expects her to help with the day-to-day chores of the household, her coronary heart belongs elsewhere: Pearl has an unhealthy obsession with the glamorous life she sees in the motion pictures and begins to lust for it to the purpose of destruction, even on the expense of those round her.
What starts out as a tale about a small-town lady dreaming of Hollywood fame rapidly turns into a darkly comedian, disturbing tale a few psychopath on the verge of a mental breakdown. Pearl's lust for the massive screen is as much of a risk to her family as it's to herself, and the way in which she impulsively destroys those who get in her method -- together with the cooked pig carcass that gathers maggots on the front porch, a sight her mother refuses to eat - is indicative of the narcissistic malevolence festering within her psyche.
Using the tools of traditional horror movies and soap operas, West's script, directed by his wife, Libby Curtis, and his course, which includes some virtuosic performing from his cast (including a scene-stealing flip by Wright), paints a picture of a girl whose psychopathy is driven as much by a need to be seen by others as it's by any real emotions she might have for them. Even the silent films she watches on the local theater -- regardless of being against her mom's needs and a waste of money -- aren't as harmless as they appear, with their specific sexual content usually serving as a type of seduction for her.
As with X, Pearl pulls from the well of horror and exploitation movies to create something that feels each fresh and acquainted at once, with a climax that, like a well-executed Carrie-esque parent-daughter showdown, combines shlockiness and pure sorrow right into a harrowing second for its protagonist. The film additionally works as a sly commentary on quarantine life and pandemic period paranoia, and a warning about the dangers of idolizing popular culture. Its last shot is a masterful bit of composition and enhancing, and it units the stage for subsequent year's MaXXXine, which picks up where Pearl leaves off..
