Why We Are In Love With Repairing Window (And You Should Too!)
Tips For Repairing Window

Many windows may require repairs to ensure they open and close properly. If the seal is damaged and causes energy bills to rise or your home to feel drafty, repairing your window can save money in the long term.

You can fix hinges that are stiff by using a ratchet loosen the cover of the operator or a bit of oil. Repairing a damaged window is also possible for a DIYer.

Cracked or Broken Glass

If your window is broken or cracked glass, it's important to address the problem as soon as you can. The crack could worsen when left untreated and can cause airflow issues within your home. If you're not confident handling the fix yourself, a professional can assist.

There are a variety of ways to fix your window depending on its severity. The most straightforward option is to apply clear tape to the crack. This will keep your family from getting cut by shards of glass while allowing air and sunlight to pass through the space. You can take it one step further by using epoxy. It's a more labor-intensive process however it can also provide more appealing results.

First, you'll need to clean around the crack. Dip a cotton rag into a solution of water and soap and gently scrub the crack. After the window has dried and the epoxy has set, apply it according to the instructions on the packaging. After the epoxy has set using a putty blade, use it to remove any excess and smooth the surface.

Stress cracks are the most frequent type of crack in a window glass at home. These usually begin near the edges of the glass, and then spread across the entire pane. They're usually the result of temperature changes in your home and can become worse with time.

If a pane of a double-pane window is broken, you will need to replace the entire unit. The windows are constructed of two pieces that function as a unit. This is different from normal windows, which can be replaced with a new window frame.

To replace a glass pane in a double-pane window you'll need to take off the glazing clips or points that keep the window in place. If you're replacing a broken pane, ensure you keep track of the pieces so that you can replace them in the future. For windows of other types it is necessary scrape away the old putty, and then apply it again to the new window.

Stained Glass

The delicate little pieces of glass that make up stained glass windows are tough and fragile. Glass can break and be broken by rough treatment, a collision with hard objects or a sudden temperature change.

The good news is that even when the glass piece is broken, it may be repairable and can be free from the expense of panel removal and replacement. Stained glass experts can employ various techniques to repair the damage such as re-leading or re-foiling, soldering, painting or patina and putting in new glass.

It can be a challenge and time-consuming to replace or repair cracked stained glass. It is crucial to work with an expert who is familiar with the various repair techniques and can choose the best one for your particular project. Each repair technique has different strengths, reversibility, and visual effects. This is why each should be evaluated individually.

Re-leading is a popular method to repair cracked leaded glass. A skilled craftsman can cut a strip of soft ductile lead known as came, to size and carefully bend it back to fit the crack. After the piece is bent, it is then soldered into place and then cement is used to keep it in place. When the new cement is dry the crack can be cleaned, polished and sealed.

Another method to repair damaged leaded glass is by finding the crack and re-leading the piece of glass. This is a costly and labor-intensive process, but it is effective. The damaged glass is removed then cleaned and sanded to smooth out the surface. The lead is then removed with a lead knife or pincers. Any mold or oxidation can be removed using the lead knife. After the lead has been removed, the sanded area of the glass is wiped down and the new lead is shaped to neatly adjoin the damaged area before being soldered in place.

An alternative that is less expensive to fix stained glass that is sagging is to add reinforcing bars to the window. They are rebar-like support structures that run along the interior side of lead and connect to the frame to stop it from sagging. The bars are usually hidden behind decorative foiling, which makes them virtually invisible.

Muntins and Mullions

The term "muntin" is familiar to those who are familiar with windows. These wood strips that are vertical separate the panes of traditional windows with multi-panes. They are typically used to create a more authentic look in historic homes and are sometimes required in city ordinances for renovations or construction in historical areas. Many modern replacement windows only use muntins to enhance the appearance of the window, not to ensure strength and stability. Muntins can still be susceptible to damage and may need to be replaced if they become rotten or broken.

Many window companies today do not differentiate between mullions or muntins because they both serve the exact same purpose. They are frequently used interchangeably, but when you're replacing windows, it's important to be aware of the distinction between them so you and your contractor are on the same team when discussing the details of your project.

A mullion is a single vertical prop that holds panes of glass together in a multi-pane design. This was a necessity prior to the advent of glass manufacturing technology because larger pieces were virtually impossible to manufacture. The frames of modern windows are made from two glass units that are glued together. Mullions are utilized in older windows to provide support and are also employed for aesthetic reasons.

If your mullions are showing signs of aging they can be repaired easily them by applying a drop or two of silicone on both sides of the muntin. Then, press it back into the frame. If you're replacing a horizontal muntin, you may need to use a coping saw to remove the old piece and then shape the end by using a file so that it fits into the mortise of the new horizontal muntin. If you'd like to blend in, purchase a new muntin slightly different from the original.

Certain IGUs have real muntins as well as mullions that are built into the unit for use only. If you are experiencing problems with these components, it's probably time to replace your window.

Frame

If you want to polish the frame, you can use the sanding pad using a fine grit. This will get rid of any stains or paint that have accumulated. Clean it again, using a dry cloth, paying special attention to the corners of the mitered joints. If the joints have opened a bit then try closing them with a gentle touch, and then apply wood glue to keep them together again. You can also use vinegar to dissolve glue in these areas, but you may need to test it on an area or two before putting it all over.

If the loose corners are a problem it is possible to disassemble the entire frame to get them in and then follow the steps 3-8 to fix the problem. If the separation is only slightly on one side, it may be possible to let the joint open a bit by moving it.

If the corners are completely broken, you will need a small clamp, wood glue, and needle-nosed pliers. If only upvc window repairs at the top and bottom are damaged, you can hammer finishing nails (these are nails that are thin and the same size as a head) into the corner to help keep it in place after the glue has dried. You should not place the nails too close to the corner or you could weaken it. You can also reinforce the corner using carpenter's glue and the hammer, or wood putty.
