For a movie about flying and war, Devotion is surprisingly quiet and understated. JD Dillard's directorial debut has a stoic stillness that allows its characters to express their emotions in additional refined methods. Unlike most present films that depend on quick enhancing and fancy CGI to distract from poor storytelling, Devotion lets the actors do the work, resulting in a movie that feels authentic, unforced and actual.


Jonathan Majors delivers a stunning performance as Jesse Brown, the first Black aviator in Navy historical past. He has a career that would catapult him into the same stratosphere as Matt Damon or Robert De Niro. His work in this film, which facilities on the strained friendship between the two most decorated fighter pilots of the Fighting 32nd Squadron, exhibits that his star is on the rise.

It's a difficult movie to watch at times, because it portrays the struggles of a Black man in a Fifties navy that continues to struggle with racial equality.
