How to Budget South America —
Although often depicted as an ultra-cheap destination, South America can quickly become expensive for travelers who are not well prepared. Fortunately, there are still some really great deals out there for backpackers and even mid-range travelers. By mixing Orçamento Sul América Saúde -priced must-sees with free or cheap activities and prioritizing cheaper countries, a traveler's money will go far in most parts of the continent.
For example, Argentina feels like it should be more expensive than other developed parts of the world, but its economic situation has kept it a cheap destination for visitors for decades. Peru is also a bargain once you get past the Machu Picchu costs, and it's possible to find affordable accommodations in Sacred Valley towns and mountain villages where few tourists visit.
The same goes for Ecuador and Colombia: It's easy to avoid the hordes of tourists in the Amazon or the beaches of Cartagena, and it's even possible to stay at a luxury lodge on the Galapagos Islands for much less than you might expect.
Of course, the big exception to these generalizations is Brazil: Its cities are more expensive than New York and it's very hard for backpackers to budget for a trip there because of its non-tied currency. It's important to check the current exchange rate before you book a flight to Brazil, and try to plan your trip when its currency is weaker.
If you don't want to spend all your time planning for a backpacking trip in South America and prefer to leave that to the professionals, consider joining an overland adventure tour with a company like G-adventures. They offer tours that explore the entire region, and include accommodation, transfers and excursions. They are usually run by experienced guides who can make sure that the schedule and cost of your trip stays within your budget.
Drinks are generally inexpensive in the region. Many places serve up good beers brewed locally, and Chile's wine is excellent for the price. You'll find surprisingly good dark beers in Argentina, and pisco (a type of unaged grape brandy) is a popular local spirit in Chile and Peru.
Meals can be very inexpensive too, especially if you avoid eating at restaurants and stick to the street vendors and markets. Fresh fruit is available in abundance across the region, and bakeries and food stands are cheap. You'll also be able to stock up on a variety of snacks and candies in any shop. If you're traveling in Ecuador, don't miss the chance to try the country's famous empanadas or try a plate of arroz con pollo (a rice dish) or cuy (guinea pig).
