10 Mesothelioma Talc Lawsuit-Related Projects To Stretch Your Creativity
Mesothelioma Lawyer Files Talc Lawsuit Against Johnson & Johnson

A man aged 24 with mesothelioma pericardial has claimed that Johnson and Johnson's baby powder caused his cancer. The Oakland mesothelioma trial is the first trial that has been held since J&J filed for bankruptcy and split off its talc division.

In the beginning of the year, substantial settlements were made in talc lawsuits in New Jersey and California. Plaintiffs linked their cancer to asbestos found in J&J's Shower Shower and Baby Powder products.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a lethal type of cancer that affects the mesothelium, or the lining surrounding organs and cavities within the body. It is most prevalent in the lungs, but can also be found in the chest and abdomen cavity. Asbestos, the only known cause of this disease, is asbestos. People who have been exposed are at a higher chance of developing it.

The first trial since J&J declared its Talcum Powder division bankrupt was opened this week, and jurors in Oakland, California were emotional as they listened to the story of the plaintiff. In 2022, the plaintiff who was just 24 years old at the time, old at the time, was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma of pericardium. He attributed his illness to childhood use of Johnson & Johnson baby powder. The jury awarded him $26 million.

J&J has been accused of concealing asbestos risks from consumers since decades. The company has a long history of hiding asbestos information from regulators, and paying for asbestos tests that produced the results they desired. These lawsuits have named several of the company's suppliers of talcum powder, including Whittaker Clark & Daniels, Imerys Talc America, and others.

Many women who used talcum powder to maintain feminine hygiene in the genital area or on sanitary napkins, or condoms have been diagnosed with cancer of the ovary, and a few have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. The lawsuits assert that J&J was aware for more than 40 years that the powder could cause ovarian cancer as well as other diseases, but failed to warn consumers.

Symptoms of mesothelioma include abdominal pain and abdominal lumps, abdominal swelling and persistent coughing. Doctors can identify the disease through a physical exam and imaging scans. These include CT scans (computer tomography), MRIs, PET or X-rays.

After a mesothelioma is diagnosed patients can undergo surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. The surgeons can remove the affected tissue depending on the location of the tumors. Patients with mesothelioma can be given a life expectancy less than five years. However, aggressive treatments such as extracorporeal Membrane transplant and cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy may prolong survival.

What is the cause of Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused by DNA mutations in cells. These mutations can cause uncontrolled growth of cells, which forms tumors in tissues. Asbestos is the most common cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure can be found in many different industries including manufacturing, mining and transportation. Asbestos exposure typically occurs 20 to 40 years prior to the time symptoms appear. Mesothelioma affects men more than women, and it is most often diagnosed in people who are in their 50s to 70s. The kind of mesothelioma caused by asbestos that someone develops is often determined by the location on their body they were exposed. Most mesothelioma patients are diagnosed with pleural msothelioma which affects the lung. Other patients are diagnosed with peritoneal melanoma, which is a mesothelioma type that affects the abdomen. Certain people are diagnosed with pericardial msothelioma. This is a rare type of cancer that affects both the liner (pericardium) and the organ itself.

Mesothelioma symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath and abdominal pain, as well as weight loss. In the last stages of mesothelioma, tumors may grow to other areas which can cause extreme discomfort and discomfort. Other symptoms that are common to mesothelioma are fluid on the lung (pleural effusion), loss of appetite, difficulties swallowing, and a blockage of the small intestine, referred to as a obstruction in the bowel. Mesothelioma is a terminal illness, and it is usually fatal.

The talcum powder trial in Oakland involved a man aged 24 who was diagnosed with pericardial cancer due to the use of J&J baby powder. His lawyers claimed that J&J knew that talc might contain asbestos, but didn't inform consumers. They also cited a letter in 1998 to an J&J executive which revealed asbestos could be present in their products.

This is the latest in a string of high-dollar verdicts against J&J. In March, J&J's Talcum powder caused ovarian mesothelioma in a woman. In March, a jury in Missouri awarded $55 Million in the same case. Seven new cases have been added to the MDL talcum powder over the last month, bringing to 37,522 the number of lawsuits pending. The majority of these lawsuits concern women who used J&J's Talcum powder to wash their feminine hygiene.

How do I know If I Have Mesothelioma?

A diagnosis of mesothelioma can be devastating. Patients should always see an expert for the most accurate diagnosis possible and prevent misdiagnosis that could lead to unnecessary treatment and let cancer spread more.

A physical exam and a blood sample can aid in identifying mesothelioma symptoms. These tests can be used to test for asbestos fibers in blood, or the health of a patient's internal organs. The most reliable method to diagnose mesothelioma is the procedure of a biopsy. Doctors take tissues or fluids from the affected area, and then look at them under a microscope to look for mesothelioma cancerous cells.

The type of mesothelioma that a sufferer has also impacts the prognosis of their patient. Pleural mesothelioma, the most common type of the disease and is responsible for the majority of cases that are diagnosed. Peritoneal cancer, which develops in the lining of the abdomen is a less prevalent type. Finally, pericardial mesothelioma, an uncommon type that develops in the heart's lining, is more rare and only makes up approximately 1% of cases.

Shortness of breath, which gets worse with time, and a bloody cough are a few of the initial symptoms. Asbestos sufferers may also experience fluid accumulation in the chest cavity. This is known as pleural effusion. The fluid can be eliminated from the chest cavity by inserting a needle into the area affected. In more serious cases, doctors might perform pleurodesis. This is which is a procedure which seals the area to prevent fluid from accumulating again within the pleura.

A mesothelioma accurate diagnosis is crucial to determine the rate of survival for a patient and treatment options. T here are many treatments available which include chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. There are also immunotherapy treatments that boosts the immune systems to fight mesothelioma and tumor treating fields that use magnetic fields to kill cancerous cells.

A mesothelioma specialist who is specialized can also assist patients in understanding the different mesothelioma cell types that determine how aggressive the cancer is and what the prognosis of the patient is. Patients should discuss their history of exposure to asbestos with their physician to determine if they are mesothelioma candidates and discover what kinds of treatment might be available to them.

Mesothelioma is a rare but fatal illness that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos was a time when it was widely used in a range of industrial and consumer products including baby powder. In talcum-powder cases plaintiffs assert that exposure to asbestos from inhaling the powder led to the development of mesothelioma, or other health issues.

J&J was allegedly aware of the dangers of talcum powder and asbestos for decades but failed to warn consumers. Plaintiffs have filed mesothelioma lawsuits against J&J seeking punitive and compensatory damages. These claims have been combined into federal and state multidistrict litigations, or MDLs.

In 2018 one of the biggest Talc cases resulted in a $4.7 billion verdict in the favor of the plaintiff. This was a major news story and set the stage for the remainder of the litigation. In the last month, a judge denied J&J's request to dismiss the lawsuits filed by the state.

J&J, however, tried to stop the litigation. LTL Management, a subsidiary of J&J was forced to file for bankruptcy after the company created a new entity to assume its liabilities. The bankruptcy was able to halt thousands of talc lawsuits, but the 3rd Circuit rejected this strategy.

The lawsuits brought by the state of Mississippi are founded on the same allegations as the individual lawsuits filed against J&J which allege that the company's failure to warn of the dangers of ovarian cancer caused by the talcum powder was negligent and violated state law.

J&J has submitted its motion to dismiss the lawsuits to another bankruptcy court. A hearing has been scheduled for June in order to determine whether the lawsuits against J&J will be allowed to proceed.
