The Bad Guys Movie Review learn the value
A squad of stereotypical villains be taught the worth of good deeds on this enjoyable and intelligent animated adventure.

Slick animation, toe-tapping music and a considerate story make this heist movie an all-ages winner. Based on a Scholastic guide collection by Aaron Blabey, the film follows a gang of critters who aren’t exactly the nicest folks. But what if they determined to vary their ways? Featuring the voice skills of Zazie Beetz (Joker), Lilly Singh (Bad Moms) and Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), this witty and entertaining movie shows that it’s by no means too late for a change of heart, even for the bad guys.

Animator Pierre Perifel, who helmed the Kung Fu Panda films and Trolls, makes his directorial debut with The Bad Guys. His crisp and fast-paced script, written by Etan Cohen (returning to animation 14 years after Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa), is each energetic and intelligent. The characters are expressive and colorful, a trait usually lacking from trendy computer-generated cartoons. And the character design — together with a slickly silver-pelted ringleader Mr. Wolf and a splenetic, nimble-limbed Ms. Tarantula whose pitter-patter of her spidery digits on keyboards is a working gag — enlivens a story that may otherwise feel too familiar to viewers.


The Bad Guys tries to set itself aside by not taking its own characters too seriously. For occasion, the lupine leader and his crew are criminals, however he tries to speak himself out of jail time by suggesting they deserve a second chance beneath the tutelage of Professor Marmalade, a self-important philanthropist guinea pig (Richard Ayoade). The Bad Guys teaches its rascally critter brethren that “being good feels so great,” causing their tails or fins to wiggle in delight. The lesson — that putting others’ wants before your own, serving to strangers in need and treating everyone fairly is the path to happiness — would possibly resonate with younger viewers.

While the story is fast and humorous, it does take a flip for the darker toward the end. There’s a bit of visual cartoon violence involving the ingestion and vomit of different animals, however nothing that’s genuinely grotesque or grief-oriented. It’s a worthy successor to Despicable Me, Wreck-It Ralph and Zootopia. But, more importantly, it’s an animated reminder that stereotypes could be modified. And that the tingly feeling of being good is healthier than any stolen jewels or ill-gotten positive aspects. That’s a message worth sharing..
