What is Mesothelioma?
A diagnosis of Mesothelioma is an incredibly devastating one. It's natural to feel shocked and confused. You may also be upset and angry.
Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the pleura which is the lung's protective wall. This cancer causes the formation of fluid inside the lungs and makes it difficult to breathe.
Asbestos exposure is the most common cause of mesothelioma. People at risk are those who have worked with asbestos, or who resided with someone who has.
What is mesothelioma?
The mesothelioma-related cancer develops on the lining mesothelium, or the lining. This lining wraps around and protects the majority of organs of your body including your heart, chest and abdomen. It is made up of two layers, which form an enveloping sac that surrounds the inner layer and organs inside your body. The fluid that flows between the layers allows the organs to move around freely. Mesothelioma cells become malignant, or cancerous, and grow into and destroy nearby tissues. They may also spread to other areas of your body (metastasize).
The most at-risk group to develop mesothelioma is people who have been working with asbestos. Asbestos workers are plumbers, electricians welders asbestos miners and auto industry workers. A higher risk is also present for people who live near asbestos-producing facilities such as factories and power plants. Mesothelioma is diagnosed among people who have been exposed to asbestos between 20 and 60 years before the disease manifests.
Pleural mesothelioma can be found most often in the lung lining. This type of mesothelioma can cause chest pain, difficulty breathing, and weight loss. It is most often affecting the lungs, however it could also affect other organs, such as the stomach and heart. Peritoneal mesothelioma is an uncommon form of the disease which affects the lining in the abdominal cavity. It can cause pain and difficulty eating.
Other types of mesothelioma are mesothelioma of the pericardial and tunica vaginal and tunica vaginalis mesothelioma, both of which are in the tissue that covers the lining of the abdomen, chest or testicles, respectively. These types of mesothelioma typically go undiagnosed, and they have lower survival rates than other forms of the disease.
The prognosis of mesothelioma depends on the type, location and stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis as as the general health status. Some patients can be successfully treated with chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Patients with mesothelioma that is more advanced might be treated with experimental therapies like immunotherapy or gene therapy. In either situation the treatment options available may dramatically increase a person's life longevity.
Symptoms
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer, usually occurs in the tissues of the chest cavity or abdomen. It is caused by exposure to asbestos, a heat and fire-resistant mineral used in insulation, construction, shipbuilding, power generation, and home renovations prior to being banned in the 1970s. The main reason for exposure is working in the asbestos industry, but those who have cleaned up work clothes with asbestos fibres or disturbed asbestos in home renovations may also be at risk of developing mesothelioma.
The majority of patients with mesothelioma experience general symptoms such as tiredness, weight loss and coughing that fluctuates in pattern or intensity and chest pain. These symptoms could be caused by a number of ailments, and patients should always consult their doctor about their symptoms. Consult your physician whether you've been exposed asbestos.
In pleural mesothelioma, the symptoms usually occur due to the tumor causing fluid build-up within the space around the lung. This build-up of fluid, also known as a "pleural effusion" can put pressure on the lungs, which makes breathing difficult. The ability to control the amount of fluid inside the pleural cavity can help improve breathlessness.
Other symptoms of Mesothelioma include an increase in temperature, night sweats and abdominal pain. The body's temperature rises when it fights against the disease. This is what causes the fever. The body attempts to cool itself down by producing night sweats in response to the temperature. These symptoms indicate that cancer is advancing and causing stress to the body.
Other symptoms of mesothelioma include fatigue, a swollen stomach and a difficulty walking. Mesothelioma may also affect the tissue around the heart that can cause chest pain as well as breathing difficulties. It is also possible to develop mesothelioma in the membrane surrounding the testicles, causing swelling or a lump in the testicles.
Mesothelioma is difficult to detect early because it is extremely rare. The symptoms of mesothelioma could be misinterpreted as other diseases, such as pneumonia or the flu. Because of this, mesothelioma signs can take anywhere from months to years to show before they are diagnosed.
Diagnosis
Mesothelioma is a cancer that is difficult to detect. Before diagnosing mesothelioma, doctors must exclude any other diseases with similar symptoms. After they have done this, they are able to determine the best treatment for you.
Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and perform an exam. Your doctor can conduct blood tests to see the efficiency of your organs. One of these tests is a complete blood count (CBC) which looks at the amount of white and red blood cells, how your liver and kidneys are working, and other important information. Mesothelioma cells often show up in these blood tests, however they are difficult to identify because they look like normal cells.
If your doctor suspects mesothelioma is the cause, they may order an imaging to determine the amount and location of any fluid or growth around the lungs or abdomen. A chest x-ray is the most common test, but if it doesn't reveal any abnormalities, doctors can then order more detailed tests such as a CT scan or an MRI.
These tests provide high-resolution images of the body by magnetic fields and radio waves to create precise images. They can detect thickening and fluid in the peritoneum and pleura which could indicate mesothelioma. A CT scan can also reveal other health problems such as a lung infection or pneumonia.
Doctors can sometimes gain a better understanding of the type of mesothelioma that you have by taking a tissue sample taken during a biopsy. This is the only method to identify mesothelioma. These samples are examined with a magnifying glass in order to determine the kind of mesothelioma and the extent of the cancer's spread.
Some doctors may inject dye into a vein, or conduct other tests, to identify the location of the cancer. This is known as staging mesothelioma. This helps doctors determine how far the cancer has spread and how severe.
Treatment
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is a result of the cells lining the lungs and organs. The cells can grow beyond their limits, and eventually form tumors (masses). The cancer can spread because the cells don't respond to signals that stop their growth from speeding up. mesothelioma asbestos lawyer can also invade blood vessels that supply the lungs with oxygen. This can make breathing difficult and cause a cough.
Doctors diagnose mesothelioma by looking at the symptoms of an individual and their the history of exposure to asbestos. They may also order imaging tests as well as other tests to help find and detect tumors. For example, doctors utilize chest X-rays to look for lung changes such as pleural thickening or pleural effusion. This is a build-up of fluid. They can also request CT scans, an MRI and an PET scan to see the location of the tumors and to determine the extent to which mesothelioma has spread. They may also take fluid from the lung (called a thoracentesis) to determine if mesothelioma is present and to relieve pressure on the lung caused by fluid accumulation.
Once mesothelioma is diagnosed, doctors can plan treatment to manage the cancer. It is essential to discuss the treatment options with your mesothelioma doctor. Some people want aggressive treatment to extend their lives and improve their chances of their chances of survival, whereas others prefer a less-intensive approach to reduce pain, nausea and other side effects.
Mesothelioma treatments can include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. The type of treatment a person receives is determined by the stage of their mesothelioma, and whether or not it is comprised of epithelioid or sarcomatoid cells. The epithelioid cell is easier to remove surgically and has a higher success rate than the sarcomatoid. Some patients have a mixture of both types, and these patients typically have less favorable outcomes than those who have only epithelioid mesothelioma.
It is essential to see your mesothelioma physician regularly after the treatment. This will help keep the cancer from recurring. The mesothelioma treatment team will come up with a new plan if it recurs.
Patients with mesothelioma may enroll in clinical trials to try new treatments. Clinical trials give people access to cutting-edge treatments that are not yet approved for general use.
