The two main classifications of energy are renewable energy and non-renewable energy. Examples of renewable energy include biomass, hydroelectric, solar, wind, geothermal. Examples of non-renewable energy include fossil fuels ( oil, natural gas, coal) and nuclear energy.

Factors that contribute to Canada being a high-energy user include Canada's large land mass, cold climate, dispersed population, and resource-based economy.

The controversy surrounding oil sands extraction is that oil sands in Alberta is mostly where Canada gets its energy from, but it has many environmental concerns. These include greenhouse gas emissions, toxic tailing ponds, and habitat destruction. It also uses lots of land, energy, and water.

The dominant source of energy in Canadas current energy mix is fossil fuels. It contributes to 80% of Canada's total energy consumption
