What is Mesothelioma?
Vimeo of Mesothelioma is an extremely devastating one. It's normal for people to be shocked, upset and confused.
Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the pleura, which is the lung's protective wall. This cancer causes fluid buildup in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe.
Asbestos exposure is the most common cause of mesothelioma. People at risk are those who have been exposed to asbestos, or were living with someone who had asbestos exposure.
What is Mesothelioma?
The cancerous mesothelioma is a cancer that develops on the lining mesothelium, or the lining. The mesothelium lining covers and protects most of the organs of your body, including your heart, chest and abdomen. It is composed of two layers, which form an enveloping sac that surrounds the organs within your body. The fluid that flows between the layers permits organs to move freely. Mesothelioma cells become malignant, or cancerous, and grow into and destroy surrounding tissue. They may also spread (metastasize) to other areas of the body.
The most at-risk population for developing mesothelioma are those who have been working with asbestos. Asbestos workers include builders plumbers, electricians, welders, asbestos miners, auto industry workers, and many more. People who live or work near asbestos facilities, such as factories and power plants, are also at risk. Patients diagnosed with mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos for between 20 and 60 years before their disease manifests.
The most frequent mesothelioma type is called pleural mesothelioma, which occurs in the lining of the lung. This kind of mesothelioma may cause chest pain, trouble breathing and weight loss. It usually occurs in the lungs, but can also affect the stomach or heart. Peritoneal mesothelioma is an uncommon form of the disease that affects the lining of the abdominal cavity. It can cause pain and difficulty eating.
The pericardial mesothelioma and the tunica vaginalis are the two other forms of mesothelioma. Both of them are found in the tissues that cover the linings of the chest, abdomen, or testicles. These types of mesothelioma often remain undiagnosed and have lower survival rates than other types of the disease.
The prognosis for mesothelioma is based on the type, location and stage of the disease at the moment of diagnosis as well in the general health status. Certain patients are successfully treated by undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Other patients with mesothelioma more advanced may receive experimental treatments like immunotherapy or gene therapy. In any case, treatment options can enhance the patient's life span.
Signs and symptoms
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer, usually occurs in the linings of the chest cavity or abdomen. The cancer is caused by asbestos, which was utilized in construction, shipbuilding, energy generation, and home renovations until it was banned in the year 1970. The main reason for exposure is working in the asbestos industry, however, people who have cleaned their work clothing containing asbestos fibres or disturbed asbestos in home renovations may also be at risk of developing mesothelioma.
The majority of patients with mesothelioma experience general symptoms like fatigue and weight loss and coughing that fluctuates in pattern or intensity, and chest pain. Patients should always consult their doctor if they notice any of these symptoms. They should also be sure to inform their doctor if they have been exposed to asbestos.
In the case of pleural asbestosis symptoms, they are usually caused by the tumor, causing fluid to accumulate in the region around the lung. This build-up, known as a pleural effusion, causes pressure on the lungs and can make breathing difficult. The volume of fluid inside the pleural cavity is important in reducing breathlessness.
Other signs of Mesothelioma include a fever, night sweats and abdominal pain. The body's temperature increases as it fights against the disease. This causes the fever. The body attempts to cool itself down by producing night sweats as a response to the temperature. These symptoms are all indications that the cancer is growing worse and is causing the body stress.
Less common mesothelioma symptoms include the abdomen swelling and fatigue, as well as difficulty walking. Mesothelioma can also affect the tissue that surrounds the heart, causing difficulty breathing and chest pain. Mesothelioma can also develop in the tissue that covers the testicles. This can cause swelling or the appearance of a lump.
Because mesothelioma can be so rare, it can be difficult to detect early. The symptoms of mesothelioma can be similar to those of other diseases, and can even be mistaken for flu or pneumonia. As a result, mesothelioma signs can take anywhere from months to years to appear before they are diagnosed.
Diagnosis
Mesothelioma can be a challenging cancer. Before diagnosing mesothelioma, doctors need to rule out any other conditions with similar symptoms. Once they have done this, they are able to determine the best treatment for you.
Your doctor will inquire about your symptoms and perform an exam. Your doctor might also recommend blood tests to assess how your organs are performing. One of these tests is the complete blood count (CBC) that examines the amount of red and white blood cells, how well your liver and kidneys are working, and other vital information. These blood tests can reveal mesothelioma, but it's difficult to recognize them due to their similarity to normal cells.
If your doctor suspects you have mesothelioma, they will likely request imaging tests to find the location and extent of any growth or fluid in the lungs or abdomen. The most commonly used test is a chest xray. If the test does not detect any abnormalities, the doctor might recommend more thorough tests, including a CT or MRI.
These tests produce detailed pictures of the body by combining radio waves with powerful magnets. They can detect fluid or thickening of the peritoneum and pleura which can indicate mesothelioma. A CT scan can reveal other health issues such as lung infections or pneumonia.
A biopsy can give doctors an idea of the type of cancer you have. This is the only certain way to diagnose mesothelioma. The samples are examined with a magnifying glass in order to determine the type of mesothelioma and the extent of the cancer's spread.
Certain doctors inject dye into a vein or perform other tests, to determine the area of the cancer. This is called staging mesothelioma and aids doctors in determining how far the cancer has spread.
Treatment
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops in the lung's lining cells and organs. The cells can multiply in uncontrolled ways, and eventually form tumors. The cancer spreads because the cells aren't able to respond to signals that prevent the growth of the cells too fast. It can also invade blood vessels that provide oxygen to the lungs. This can result in breathing problems and a cough.
Doctors diagnose mesothelioma by examining the symptoms of an individual and their history of asbestos exposure. They can also order imaging tests and other lab tests in order to find and detect tumors. For example, doctors use chest X-rays to check for lung changes such as pleural thickening or the pleural effusion, which is fluid build-up. They can also request CT scans, MRI and an PET scan to determine the location of the tumors and to determine the extent to which mesothelioma is spreading. They can also draw fluid from the lungs (called a Thoracentesis) to test for mesothelioma and reduce pressure on the lungs caused by fluid accumulation.
When mesothelioma is discovered doctors can design treatment to manage the cancer. It is crucial to discuss treatment goals with your mesothelioma physician. Some people prefer aggressive treatment to improve their chances of survival and prolong their lives, while others prefer a less intensive method of reducing the negative effects of treatment, such as pain and nausea.
Treatments for mesothelioma can include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. The type of treatment a person receives depends on the stage of mesothelioma as well as whether it is comprised of epithelioid or sarcomatoid cell. The epithelioid cells are easier to remove by surgery and has a better chance of success than sarcomatoid. Some patients are a mix of both types, and these patients typically have less favorable outcomes than those with epithelioid mesothelioma only.
After treatment is completed it is crucial to follow up with your mesothelioma physician regularly. This can help prevent the cancer from returning. If it does recur in the future, your mesothelioma specialists will devise an entirely new treatment plan.
Some patients with mesothelioma enroll in clinical trials to try new treatments. Clinical trials let patients be able to access cutting-edge treatments which have not yet been approved for general use.
