Trump's relationship with Kazakhstan was not limited to Tevfik. Trump was harshly criticised for his view that Kazakhstan was an ally despite the unreliable government.

Nazarbayev advocated nuclear nonproliferation and that's why we hosted him. Kazakhstan is a world leader in nonproliferation, having given up its Soviet-inherited, nuclear weapons. The US's attention post-Cold War on Central Asia has been shifted to Afghanistan.

Trump's South Asia strategy needed Pakistan to separate from. Therefore, the US was in need of Kazakhstan as an alternative back-door shipping route to Afghanistan.
