Best Over-Ear Headphones
Over-ear headphones completely encapsulate your ears and allow you to fully immerse in the sound. They are typically designed for audiophiles and have features like active noise cancellation and control apps.
The Focal Bathys are a wireless pair with ANC and a mobile application to adjust the EQ and presets. They also support high-res audio for wired listening via USB-C.
Sony WH-1000XM5
The WH-1000XM5 is Sony's latest addition to their top-of-the-line noise cancellation range. They have a fresh new design, upgraded ANC and a lot of the same features as their predecessors but with higher-end materials and a slightly higher quality sound.
At just 250g, they're light for over-ear ANC headsets. This makes them very comfortable to wear for long periods of time, whether you're listening to a podcast or reading a book. The headband is soft and it features an ear-friction rod design similar to the Grado Labs SR60x that prevents your ears from becoming too cold.
With a sound quality that can satisfy those who enjoy music casually and audiophiles, the WH1000XM5's sound signature is tuned to put a little emphasis on bass but is not overpowering or harsh. The earphones feature a wide and spacious soundstage, with excellent instrument separation. This lets you listen to the subtleties of your music. The earcups feature touch controls that are simple and responsive. You can swipe forward to access the next track, reverse to hear the previous track and then up and down to adjust the volume. The headphones are capable of connecting to two devices simultaneously and, thanks to a built-in sensor, they automatically stop the playback when removed from your head. You can also switch on the ambient mode by placing your palm on the right earcup that lets you be aware of what's happening around you without taking off the headphones.
best headphones online shopping can also be paired with your voice assistant. Bluetooth low-energy is also available, as is high-resolution audio (via LDAC). They come with a sturdy carrying case made from top quality fabric, as well as an USB-C cable for charging. The headphones work with Android and iOS smartphones as well as computers operating Windows or macOS. The WH-1000XM5's battery life is exceptional. In our battery test we recorded 31 hours and 53 minutes with the ANC on which was more than Sony's advertised 30 hour battery life.
The WH1000XM5 comes with a fantastic microphone for making calls. There's no static or muffled audio in the background. Noise-canceling is also excellent, and these headphones are ideal for public transportation and the office.
Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2
The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 is a major improvement over its predecessor, offering high-end performance and features. The Bowers and Wilkins PX7 S2 is a premium model with a variety of features like 24-bit wireless streaming and active noise cancellation optimized and clear voice calls on any compatible mobile or tablet. The 40mm drivers, that are custom-designed and angled to fit in each earcup, offer more deep and focused listening experience. Six carefully placed microphones offer excellent call clarity even in noisy environments. A built-in microphone and remote lets you control calls and music from any device that is compatible.
The headphones sport a similar elegant and refined design as the original PX7. They feature accent rings around the earcups and a silver-colored headband. The earcups are cushioned with memory foam and fit comfortably on the cranium, yet they never feel tight. The new design and shape was refined over a period of time and offers an incredibly comfortable clamping pressure that doesn't press hard on my own skull, which is a rotund one.
They're 2 ounces lighter (or 307g) and a bit thinner than the Sony WH1000XM5. They're light enough for carrying in your backpack or bag without any discomfort, and will remain comfortably in place for long listening sessions. The headband can be folded by using a sturdy hinge on the back.
They're powered by Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive support which is ideal for both high-resolution audio and tight video sync. The 3.5mm cord connects to the USB-C port on the right earcup. The status indicator on the headphone is a nice addition. It flashes green to show rapid charging, and solid blue to indicate Bluetooth pairing.
The B&W app has the same features as the hardware onboard buttons including bass and treble adjustment as well as action button assignment wear detection, a cycle through ANC modes and much more. When you play music on your iPhone, the app displays album cover and track titles. Popular extras such as music presets and a soundscapes mode aren't available, however.
Sennheiser HD 800 S
The HD 800 S is the successor to the legendary headphones from Sennheiser, and it is designed to meet most demanding requirements. Its technical construction has been optimized to achieve a detail resolution that encompasses all frequencies as well as dynamic range and stereo panorama. It also delivers the most realistic spatial sound you'll ever experience on a pair of open-back headphones.
The headphone has an impedance of 300 ohms, which means it requires a top-quality headphone amplifier to drive it to the levels you want without distortion. It is recommended to utilize a balanced connection, which can increase the output and enhance the sound quality.
These headphones are designed to be used by professionals and have a sturdy metal frame, with a mixture of leather and plastic. The design is minimalist and doesn't resemble an expensive pair of headphones, however they feel luxurious in the hands and are well-built. They come with a carry pouch and an additional audio cable and a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter.
With an unison sound profile, the HD 800 S reproduces natural instruments and vocals, even though they are somewhat light on bass. This is because the open-back design creates a large and out-of-head soundstage. The treble is very good, with minor peaks and drops. The region of the treble has a linear quality which means you won't have issues with piercingsibilants or even the upper bite of the drum snare.
Even with the absence of loud bass, they can still provide dynamism and impact when needed. These headphones are still enjoyable for those who love rock music with punchy basses, but may not be as impressive as other models on this list.
These Sennheiser headphones have a wonderful mid-range. They are a linear pair with a slight incline in the upper mids that won't be noticed by the majority of listeners. They can also reproduce precise time gradations, which is a nice benefit.
The HD 800 S is a pair of exceptional headphones that are ideal for professionals and audiophiles. They're a top choice because of their outstanding audio quality and comfortable fit. The headphones are costly, but they will last you for many years and perform in any setting.
Anker Soundcore Life Q20
The Anker Soundcore Q20 is a great set of headphones for anyone who wants to relax or just want a pair of affordable headphones that block out noise. They come with a simple pouch which will provide protection when you put them into a bag, and their battery can last for multiple long haul flights. The ANC works well to block out loud passengers and engine rumbles, but their audio profile is a bit warm and bass-heavy.
The Life Q20's controls can be easy to use and are well-marked. On the left ear cup, you'll find buttons for powering up and pairing the headphones, as well as for turning off or on active noise cancellation. On the right ear cup you'll find controls for playing back media which include a multi-function button that allows you to activate the voice assistant of your phone and switch on Anker's BassUp feature (more on this later). The built-in mic can be used to make phone calls hands-free.
Anker's Soundcore Life Q20 headphones provide an immersive and deep listening experience due to the custom 40 mm dynamic drivers that offer certified Hi-Res Audio. With a treble that stretches up to 40 kHz the headphones are able to provide exceptional clarity and clarity, while their hybrid active noise cancelling technology is designed to block out a wider range of low and mid-frequency sounds.
Anker Soundcore Q20 doesn't support aptX. This is disappointing. This means you won't able to take advantage of the superior codec's lower latency when you're playing on your computer.
In terms of comfort, the Life Q20's memory-foam ear cups and headband are comfortable enough to wear for extended periods of time without creating discomfort. The ear cups can also rotate to adjust to your unique head shape. The included 3.5mm audio cable lets you to listen to music while charging the battery.
