Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Adults Medications
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults is a prevalent condition that causes problems with impulsivity, concentration and social abilities. It is treated by medication, education and therapy.
The most commonly used medications to treat ADHD are stimulants and antidepressants. They target certain chemicals within your brain, called norepinephrine and dopamine.
Stimulants
There are many types of medications available for adults suffering from adhd. Some are stimulants while others are non-stimulant medicines that work by increasing the levels of norepinephrine or dopamine in the brain.
Stimulants are used to enhance attention and focus. They are typically the first line medication for adults with ADHD. They can be combined with cognitive behavior therapy to help improve a person’s general symptoms and performance.
Combining medications with psychosocial (behavioral) treatments is the best way to treat for ADHD. This is called "comprehensive therapy." It may include medication, cognitive therapy, counseling, behavioral parent training, school-based interventions, and other kinds of psychosocial interventions.
Doctors are required to test various drugs to determine which is most effective for their patients. They usually start with a small dose and increase it gradually until they attain the desired clinical outcome.
It can take several weeks of trial-and-error to find the correct medicine. Once the right medication is discovered, it can be prescribed and maintained on an ongoing basis.
Most patients respond very well to stimulant drugs. Patients are able to manage their symptoms and return to their normal lives. However, some patients do suffer from side effects like fatigue, headaches and irritability. These effects can be controlled by altering the dosage or the time you take the medication.
Many adults with ADHD are comorbid with other mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. In these instances we attempt to treat the most severe disorder first before we tackle the other disorders.
Drugs that have proven to be effective in addressing the main symptoms of ADHD are those that boost the levels of dopamine as well as norepinephrine in the brain. They are referred to as "norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors" and "dopamine agonists."
Dextroamphetamine Adderall, Methylphenidate and Adderall XR are the most commonly prescribed stimulants to people who suffer from ADHD. These drugs have been in use for a long time and have been proven safe and effective in treating the underlying symptoms of ADHD.
These stimulants can be effective in the reduction of ADHD symptoms however they can cause side effects. These adverse effects are usually described as the "crash" or the "rebound effect."
It is important that adults are aware of the potential side effects of stimulants. They can be very disruptive and are likely to affect a person's daily life and relationships with their family and friends.
Another consideration is the risk of high blood pressure and a rapid heart rate while taking stimulants. Those who are taking these medications need to keep their heart rate and blood pressure monitored by their doctor every day.
It is important to take ADHD medication as prescribed and in moderation is the best method to avoid these side effects. Consult your doctor immediately if you have concerns about any of these effects or any other negative side effects. adult add medications can give you more information on the potential side effects of the medication they prescribe for your child or for you.
