Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves
Summary: These basic and lightweight stoves burn wood, hexamine tablets, gas canisters and white fuel through a single nozzle. These stoves are popular in cold weather, but they can be noisy and lack the ability to control the simmer.
Some multi-fuel stoves are hybrids, capable of burning multiple types of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal can be used with white and isobutane canisters for fuel.
Optimus Nova
The Optimus Nova multi-fuel stove can be used to cook a variety of liquid fuels. It has a quick priming burner, a self-purging aluminium pump, and a precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and broad legs make it a solid and solid stove. This makes it a perfect stove for backpacking groups, base camps, kayaking and arctic camping.
The Optimus Nova is different from other liquid fuel stoves that are plagued by unburned fuel remaining in the fuel line or the nozzle. This can be fixed by simply flipping over the bottle. This removes intake hoses from the fuel and causes them to absorb air which puts out flames and depressurizes bottle.
This seems like an clever solution to a long-standing problem and it certainly does the trick. The Nova can also be used with a range of standard fuel bottles that seal with an o-ring. This includes MSR bottles. It also comes with a fully featured stove bag that has separate pockets for spare parts, tools and lubricant, as well as the fuel pump.
This is a great stove for backpacking that is suitable for use in the UK. It is particularly useful for expeditions, where various fuels are required. The price is affordable when compared with other canister stoves that have similar capabilities. The Optimus Nova is also easy to maintain and fun to use.
Kovea Hydra
The Kovea Hydra multi fuel stove first came on the market in 2010 and has been a favourite choice for backpackers since. A few UK backpackers seem to give the stove much attention these days maybe because they've gotten fallen behind with more popular brands or whatever the most recent lightweight product from China or Korea is but that doesn't mean that the Hydra does not have its merits.
It is a compact and lightweight stove that burns all liquid fuels including white gas, propane butane and white gas with one nozzle. It's a typical stove, with the burner mounted to a body that is anchored by three fold-out support legs. A pump is located on top of the fuel hose, the generator loop goes around the inlet, and the flame spreader is up above that. The burner itself is a low velocity flame, which makes it a little less affected by wind.
It is a nice feature that it can be utilized with a canister of isobutane or propane, making it a versatile little cooker. It's easy to simmer on isobutane or propane and burns all fuel types at a reasonable level, however it is a little slower than some other stoves when you use white gas.
The instructions for the Hydra are written in English but they were clearly not written by native English speakers. The instructions warn against the use of certain types of lighter fluid that, if misinterpreted as what is actually intended can result in an accident that would land Kovea in a lot of hot legal water. However that any 7/16ths UNEF threaded gas canister from a reputable manufacturer should work just fine.
Primus OmniLite Ti
The Primus Omnilite Ti is a excellent choice for those looking for a multifuel stove that is able to cook using a variety of fuels. It can be used with gas, petrol/gasoline or diesel, kerosene, and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each fuel type and can also be used to adjust the flame size, which is a nice feature. This stove also has a fuel line that sits flat on the ground and is easily connected to the tank.
While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it requires maintenance in order to ensure it is operating properly. It could be dangerous as it explodes when you are priming. This is a problem that occurs with all liquid fuel stoves that use a secondary spindle throttle at the stove's end to vaporize fuel, instead of the generator coil.
Another issue is the fact that it requires different jets for each type of fuel. This means that if cooking on kerosene, the jet hole must be smaller than when using gas. This is a minor nuisance but it's still worth mentioning.
MSR Whisper Lite
The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the smallest, lightest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also easy to repair in the field. It can be run on canister liquid gas or fuel and comes with attachments for both. The new design is lighter by 10% than its predecessor and the burner mechanism has been redesigned to improve heat distribution. This is a great option for backpackers with a limited budget or for beginners.
The whistler Lite takes a little time to set up to prime and boil water, but it's a reliable stove that won't fail you. The flame is powerful when it is turned to the max and can boil the water to a liter in less than two minutes. The only drawback is that it doesn't cook as well as other stoves.
This is the reason MSR has created the Dragonfly stove to be an efficient simmering burner. It's similar to the whistler, but is smaller and has more performance. It's not as cheap as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus stove and cookset is a fantastic alternative that offers the same configuration for a fraction of the cost. You can also get a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane containers as well. Both versions share the same basic design but the Universal version is also compatible with canister fuel.
Coleman Sportster II
This is a simple and basic Coleman stove that does its job. It's sturdy, compact and self-contained with the tank at the bottom and the burner up at the top. 2 kw multi fuel stove makes it easy to use and an excellent option for backpackers, beginners who want to save on weight, and for those of us who want to keep an extra or two in the van.
This stove is designed to burn Coleman's proprietary fuel (naptha also known as "white gas") but it can be used with non-leaded gas as well. This will save you money as a gallon of gasoline can last longer than the conventional Coleman liquid fuel cylinder.
Liquid fuel stoves have a steep learning curve as you'll need to properly pressurize and prepare them to create a beautiful blue flame. If you do it wrong your fuel may be sprayed, pool, or splash over the burner or explode. Try it out in the open before taking it on your trip to get the hang of it.
The stove will sacrifice some performance or odor reduction with non-coleman fuels however that's a trade off for the extra flexibility it offers. Make sure 5kw defra multifuel stove purchase unleaded gas, and not one that's enriched with alcohol or Methanol. These types of fuel can cause the unit's performance to decline and even explode.
ATG Jiko
The ATG Jiko multi fuel stove made in South Africa (formerly known as the Jiko) is a lightweight multifuel stove built for harsh environments like Africa. It's an extremely compact and reliable all-in-one system that burns solid fuel, alcohol, tabs, and also gels using one nozzle. It's a light minimalist design that is priced less than most other multifuel stoves, and also has low costs of ownership, with fuel being cheaper per Liter than gas canisters.
Other multifuel stoves come with a distinct nozzle for each type of fuel. This makes them fiddly to change over in cold weather or using gloves and can add to their overall weight. Multifuel stoves that are of the current model use a single nozzle to burn multiple fuels, making it much easier. They can be called hybrids or compressed fuel multifuel stoves. They are also referred to under other names like isobutane, white gas, kerosene and unleaded gasoline/car fuel.
A multifuel stove kit is available to transform your Trangia burners into multifuel cookers. These are available in camping stores that specialize in outdoor equipment and are available internationally. They're a great choice for Trangia fans. They're capable of burning all liquid fuels with the exception of diesel and if equipped with the right accessories can even simmer.
