a. Summarize two (2) main ideas in the movie using one (1) movie evidence each to authenticate the main ideas.
1, Ishaan, is known to be a trouble child at school at home and in the community at the start of the movie when he got into the fight with the boy at home. This is because he does not speak much and is always doing something different from the others, he as a unique personality. At the start of the movie his different subject teachers were calling out the students test scores, and Ishaan failed them all. he did not take home those test scores because he knew what would happen where is dad is concern. Ishaan had an idea that something is wrong with him, but he did not understand what is happening.
2.Ishaan, grades and respond to his schoolwork is consistently poor and got worst, he pays little or no attention to the teacher or in class he is having an issue which neither his parents nor teachers recognize. The scene in the movie when the teacher called out to Ishaan to read from the textbook as he was far gazing out the window with his imagination of things he sees in a different way. the teacher asked him to find the page then chapter and section he is to read from, and you could see he was very confused, and he was not able to read what he was seeing in the book after the teacher asked his peer sitting next to him to assist him in finding the page. He told the teacher that he could not see the words properly as the letters of words were dancing. At this point the teacher was very upset as she thinks he was being rude and disrespectful.
2. The Exceptionality:
a. Provide a rationale substantiating the exceptionality portrayed in the movie, supporting your response with IDEA or DSM-5 definitions.
Ishaan was experiencing learning disability at his first school before his parents send him off to a boarding school. he had the same experience at this new boarding school where the teachers did not see that he was having a learning disability. Ishaan struggled with reading, writing, spelling, and solving mathematical problems. The learning disability was identified in the movie by the new Art teacher Mr. Ram when he spoke with Rajan, Ishaan's friend who told him the teacher about his difficulties with his classwork and test scores he also tells the teacher that Ishaan tries really hard to get the work correct but always gets everything wrong the teacher Mr. Ram then went and took all Ishaan books and started going through them, this where he recognizes that Ishaan had a learning disability. A reading and writing problem. This disability is known as dyslexia.
According to IDEA learning disability means a disorder in 1 or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which disorder may manifest itself in an
imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations.
b. Using supporting sources, describe two (2) characteristics of the above-named exceptionality as manifested in the movie.
1, Reading problems - By far the most prevalent trait among students with learning difficulties is difficulty reading. Due to reading difficulties, around 80% of all children who are classified as learning challenged are referred for special education. Students who don't pick up reading by the first grade usually lag behind their classmates in reading comprehension as well as overall academic performance. (Kame’enui, Good, & Harn, 2005). Research indicates that dyslexia, or specific reading problem, is more than just a language or fundamental reading skill developmental delay. Rather, it is a chronic deficit. (Lyon, Shaywitz, & Shaywitz, 2003). Dyslexia is a unique learning disorder with a neurological origin, according to the International Dyslexia Association. It is characterized by poor spelling and decoding skills, as well as challenges with accurate and/or fluent word recognition. (2008, p. 1)
Ishaan reading when the teacher called out to him in the classroom and asked him to read the sentences and identify the verbs. Ishaan replied by saying he can't the teacher asked why he said the letters are dancing. the teacher then asks him to read the dancing letters and he responded by saying blah blah blah.
2. Social Skills Deficits - Social issues are more common in students with learning impairments. Rejection, low social standing, less pleasant encounters with teachers, difficulties making friends, and loneliness are all consequences of poor social skills that many children with learning disabilities face, irrespective of where they are placed in the classroom.t (Estell, Jones, Pearl & Van Acker, 2009; Wiener, 2004). Students with learning difficulties may have poor social skills because they don't know how to read nonverbal emotional expressions in others and instead interpret social events in light of their own experiences. (Meadan & Halle, 2004; Most & Greenbank, 2000).
3. Accommodations:
a. Explain how one (1) accommodation or modification (if any) was used to support the character in the movie and state its perceived effectiveness.
The choice the parents and teacher made to send Ishaan off to boarding school. This decision was to see if there would have been difference in his learning. but this decision affected not only Ishaan it also affected his brother and his mother. Ishaan was mentally physically and emotionally depressed. He was not adopting well to the new environment.
b. Justify one (1) additional accommodation or modification you would suggest/recommend to support the character.
Evaluation (testing) Accommodations are modifications to assessment materials (big print, for example) or processes (longer time, for example) that let students show off their skills, not their limitations, on exams and tests. A student with a learning disability, such as dyslexia, may not be able to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities on an assessment without accommodations. The validity of an item or test is unaffected by an accommodation.
For children with dyslexia or other learning difficulties, accommodations are meant to guarantee equal access to the whole educational experience. Some examples of accommodations include extended exam times, preferred seating, a separate testing room, class notes, spell check, and calculator use. For example, when academic knowledge (history, biology, literature) is the target skill being measured, accommodations can be made to allow a student to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities without lowering learning or performance expectations or changing what is being measured.
The content of instruction is not altered, students are not given an unfair advantage, and the information or skills that are tested are not altered by accommodations. Students with learning difficulties can display their learning without being impeded by their disability thanks to accommodations. The regular cycle of instruction and assessment must include appropriate accommodations; they should never be saved for assessment times alone.
4. Purpose/Conclusion:
a. Evaluate ONE (1) possible impact of the movie on one’s attitude toward persons with disabilities.
What impacted me from the movie was how Ishaan was treated by the teachers
Inclusion - The new teacher Mr. Ram after recognizing Ishaan learning disability started to observe the child learning styles, what was his weakness and what was his strength he saw that Ishaan expressed what was going through his mind. Through painting he freely expresses his emotions and when he paints. so, the teacher
