The U.S. Murders 2020 - Where Are the Highest Rates?

Despite the increasing rates of lethal crime, many of these states voted for a Republican presidential candidate in every election this century. How can we reduce the high murder rate?

2020 will see the highest number ever recorded firearm homicides. While handguns remain the most frequently used weapon in murders worldwide, the circumstances of these incidents don't usually get recorded. For example, more murders than 4,000 were attributed in part to gangs. More then 900 were attributed due to arguments. Nearly half were attributed for other crimes such as drug crimes or robberies. The largest category is "unknown".

There are many factors that could be contributing to high homicides rates in a specific county. The first is the county's median income. This is a strong indicator of homicide deaths. Homicide rates are generally lower in counties with high Republican voting rates than in counties with lower incomes. These counties have a higher median household wealth than counties with lower earnings. Second, the South has higher homicides.

Another factor is isolation from others. Since 2009, the homicide rate has risen by around 30 percent. Although this is still a lower rate than the high-crime 1990s it is about 40% higher than the overall rate. However, the rate for violent crime, which includes assault, murder and robbery, increased by 5%. In fact, the rise is the first year-over-year increase in over four years.
