The WH-1000XM5 headphones from Sony are the latest upgrade to their best-in-class noise cancellation line-up. The headphones have a new design and improved ANC. They also come with many of the same features, but with higher-end sound quality and superior materials.
With only 250g, they're light for over-ear ANC headsets. They're very comfortable to wear for long periods of time, even if you're listening to a podcast or book. The headband is supple, and has the same design of a friction rod as the Grado Labs SR60x that prevents your ears from getting too cold.
The WH-1000XM5 comes with a distinct sonic signature that is created to please people who listen to music for pleasure as well as serious audiophiles. It is tuned with a slight emphasis in bass, yet it's not harsh or blazing. The earphones have a large and spacious soundstage, with excellent instrument separation. This allows you to be able to hear the finer details of your music. The earcups have control buttons that are easy to use and responsive. They're powered by Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive support which is great for both high-resolution audio and fast video sync. You can play them wired too, using the included 3.5mm cable that connects to an USB-C port located on the right earcup. The headphone's status indicator is a helpful gesture, flashing green to indicate a rapid charge, and solid blue when Bluetooth pairing is active.
The B&W App offers the same features that the onboard buttons in the hardware offer including bass and treble adjustment as well as action button assignments, wear detection, cycling through ANC modes, etc. The app also shows an album cover and track's title when you play music on your iPhone. However, some popular features such as music presets and soundscapes feature are not available.
