Double Glazed Window Repairs
Double glazing is an excellent investment for your home, however it can be a pain when it fails to function correctly. Fortunately, most issues can be fixed and you don't have to replace your windows or doors.
Double-glazed windows comprise two glass panels that are separated by a thin gap that is filled with insulating gas such as Krypton or argon. This increases a window's efficiency.
Broken panes
Double-pane windows are resistant to breaking than single-pane glass, they are still able to break or shatter. When a pane becomes broken in your double glazing, it's crucial to repair it quickly to avoid moisture and energy losses.
You can opt for either a temporary repair or more intensive epoxy fix depending on the extent of your crack. A temporary repair will help to stop further cracks from occurring and protect against rain and cold air. A more extensive repair will strengthen the crack and will provide an even stronger seal.
To replace a broken double-pane window, remove the frame and place it on a flat surface. Then, place a grid of duct tape on the pane to keep any glass pieces from falling off during removal. Once the tape is secured then pull the old double pane glass out of the frame. Then clean the rabbet and grooves with a wire brush and vacuum or wipe them with a damp cloth. Remove the wood moldings if necessary and scrape off all putty or metal glazing points prior to installing the new pane. Apply silicone caulk in the rabbets and grooves to ensure a tight fit.
If you're repairing a cracked glass by yourself, begin by sanding the glass until it's smooth and free of paint. Heat guns can be used to soften any glazing or putty points. After the rabbet has been cleaned the putty knife can be used to press putty rope into position. Make sure that the putty is of an even thickness and that it presses evenly against the glass and frame.
If you are looking for the long-term solution then you could opt for an epoxy repair instead of replacing. This option requires more work and a longer wait time but it's more appealing and will last longer than a temporary repair.
Condensation
Condensation is among the most frequent double-glazed window issues, but it doesn't necessarily mean your windows are defective. The fact that your windows show condensation is actually a good indicator that your double glazing is performing what it is supposed to keep the cold out and letting the warmth in.
It is actually water vapour from your home which condenses on the glass's surface when you observe condensation. It's a natural phenomenon that isn't harmful to your windows in the event that you don't leave it on the surface long enough.
Internal condensation is often caused by too much humidity in the room or the low internal temperatures, which causes cold surfaces, like windows, to attract moisture from the air that has a high dew point (the temperature at which water turns back into liquid). The steam from kettles, showers and hot pots and the cooking pans can also create humidity in kitchens and bathrooms.
To avoid condensation, try not to hang wet clothes near your windows and always make sure that your uPVC frames are able to provide ample air circulation to avoid the build-up of moisture. Also, ensure that your double glazed windows are properly insulated and fitted, with the right gap (6mm is best) to ensure maximum energy efficiency. You could also consider adding air vents that are one-way to your windows to increase insulation. If you're still seeing condensation, however, then there's a problem with the seals or gaskets and this is definitely an issue that requires the expertise of an expert.
Draughts
A window that is drafty is a sign that the seal between the glass panes of your double glazing has begun to leak and is likely to need replacing. This could affect the insulation of your home and could cause an increase in energy bills, so it's important to act quickly when you notice the issue.
A window repair service can replace the sealed unit for you, while restoring the effectiveness of your windows. They can also replace existing frames with new energy-efficient features, including argon-filled glass units and thermal spacer bars to reduce heat loss, and cut down on heating costs.
It is also worth checking the locking mechanisms on your double-glazed windows. Older uPVC window locks are infamous for becoming stiff over time, but it's easy to fix this issue by regular lubrication using a specialist uPVC cleaning product.
A professional double glazing company can ensure that your repair is completed correctly. They will have all the tools necessary to ensure that your window is watertight and completely sealed. They'll also be able to repair any other damages to your frame so you can enjoy your beautiful new double-glazed window with confidence.
Double-glazed windows are durable and durable, however they can sometimes develop problems because of wear and tear or the weather. If you notice any of these issues make contact with your local double glazing repair company immediately to fix them as soon as you can. You'll be happy you did it - a double glazing installation well-repaired will give your home a tangible feeling of quality, and will also save your energy costs!
Smudging
Double-glazed windows consist of two panes that have a spacer, air or dense gas between them to make an effective seal that blocks heat passing through the frame. They're a great option to save energy and reduce the carbon footprint of your home. Double glazing may have several issues that can affect its performance and lifespan. These include condensation, mist and being difficult to open or close.
Difficulty opening your double glazed windows could be due to the weather, or it might be a fault with the hinges, handles or mechanism. Wiping them clean with cold water and then lubricating them can help to ease the problem, but you should contact the manufacturer that you purchased windows from as soon as possible to get it repaired.
This is another common problem that is easily fixable. Also, make sure to check the warranty to determine what repairs are covered under this warranty.
Fogged and foggy glass can be caused by moisture between the panes. It's typically a sign of faulty seals or an old double-glazing unit that needs replacing. This is a simple fix that can be accomplished without the need to replace the whole window.
To fix this issue technicians will make tiny holes to vent any moisture between the glass panes and the rest of the window. Once the moisture is removed the new antifog coating is put on and the window is sealed. Sometimes, windows need to be removed however, in the majority of instances, it can be done at home.
Mist
Double glazing that is older can have a mist problem particularly if it occurs both within and outside the window. It is due to an issue with the seal that is designed to hold air and moisture between the two panes. This seal is created when making double-glazed units by sealing both panes using an airtight polysulphide or butyl seal around the edges and a spacer bar. This is meant to create insulation and prevent the window from being leaking. If you have misted double glazed windows, it may be difficult to take off and clean, since you'll need to break through the hardened seal in order to clean.
The problem with mist is that it allows moisture to get in, which then causes condensation between the panes of glass. The reason for this is that there is a significant difference in temperature between the interior and exterior surfaces of the glass. The moisture is trapped within the gaps, resulting in a milky appearance. This can be very unattractive, and can be difficult to remove.
There are a number of companies that claim they can fix your double glazed windows that are misting by drilling holes into the unit and injecting chemicals through the holes, which absorbs the moisture from within. However, killer deal is not an end-to-end solution and it's much easier to replace the whole double-glazed unit if suffering from misting.
The easiest way to prevent misty double glazing is by keeping a good level of ventilation and regularly cleaning your windows. It is also an excellent idea to install extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms and clean windows with a damp cloth to reduce the build-up of moisture. If you're unable to prevent the issue, we suggest that you replace your double-glazed windows with A-rated windows to increase energy efficiency.
