Best Over-Ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones completely encapsulate your ears, allowing you to be immersed in the sound. They are typically tuned for audiophiles, and come with features such as active noise cancellation and control apps.

The Focal Bathys are a wireless pair with ANC and a mobile app for tweaking the EQ and presets. They also support hi-res audio for wired listening via USB-C.

Sony WH-1000XM5

The WH1000XM5 earphones from Sony are the latest model in their noise cancelling lineup. They have a fresh new design, improved ANC, and many of the same features as their predecessors, but with premium materials and slightly higher-quality sound.

They're light for over-ear ANC headphones at 250 grams. They are very comfortable to wear, even if you're reading or listening to a book. The headband is supple, and it has the same design of a friction rod as the Grado Labs SR60x that prevents your ears from becoming too cold.

With an audio quality that will please those who enjoy music casually and audiophiles, the WH-1000XM5's sonic signature is tuned to put a little emphasis on bass but is not too loud or harsh. They have a wide and open soundstage with good instrument separation, which allows you to hear the details in your music. The earcups come with control buttons that are easy to use and responsive. Swipe up or down to alter the volume. You can also swipe forward to listen to the next track and backwards to hear the prior track. The headphones are capable of connecting to two devices at once and, thanks to a built-in sensor, they will automatically stop the playback when removed from your head. You can also switch on the ambient mode by placing your palm on the right earcup and allowing you to hear what's going on around you, without taking off the headphones.

They can also be linked with your voice assistant. Bluetooth low-energy is also supported, as is high-resolution audio (via LDAC). The headphones come with a carry case made of top quality fabric and a USB-C charging cable. The headphones are compatible with Android and iOS smartphones, as well as computers running Windows or macOS. The battery longevity of the WH-1000XM5 is exceptional. In our standard battery test we recorded 31 hours and 53 minutes with the ANC on which was higher than Sony's advertised 30 hours battery life.

The WH1000XM5 is a great microphone for making calls. There's no muffled or static audio in the background. The noise-canceling performance is also excellent and they're a great option for public transport as well as the office.

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2

The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, delivering premium performance and features. The Bowers and Wilkins PX7 S2 offers premium performance and features, including 24-bit wireless streaming and active noise cancellation optimized and clear voice calls on any compatible mobile device or tablet. The custom-designed 40mm drivers are carefully angled inside each earcup for an even more focused and deep listening experience. Six strategically placed microphones provide exceptional call clarity even in noisy environments. And an inline remote and microphone let you control your calls and music on any compatible device.

The headphones have a elegant and refined design as the original PX7. They have accent rings that wrap around the earcups as well as a silver-colored headband. The memory foam earcups fit comfortably but not too tight on the cranium. The redesigned shape and form took a long time to perfect, and provides a comfortable clamping force that isn't too hard even on my own rotund cranium.

At 10.8 ounces (or 307g), they're 2 ounces lighter than the Sony WH-1000XM5, as well as just a little smaller. The headphones are light enough to be carried in a backpack or bag and stay in place comfortably during long listening sessions. A strong hinge on the back of the headband enables you to fold them up to make it easy to transport them in an enclosed case.

The headphones are powered by Bluetooth 5.2 with the aptX Adaptive. This is great for high-resolution audio as well as a fast video sync. You can also play them wired too, using the included 3.5mm cable that connects to the USB-C port on the right earcup. The status indicator on the earphone is a nice addition. It flashes green to indicate rapid charging and solid blue to signal Bluetooth pairing.

The B&W app provides the same controls as the onboard buttons in the hardware such as bass and treble adjustments and assigning action buttons wear detection, the ability to cycle through ANC modes and much more. The app also displays an album cover and track title when you play music using your iPhone. Popular extras such as music presets and soundscapes mode aren't available, however.

Sennheiser HD 800 S

The HD 800 S is a successor to the legendary Sennheiser headphones and was made to meet the highest expectations. The design and construction of the headphones is optimized to give the highest resolution in detail that covers all of the frequency spectrum dynamic range, as well as stereo panorama. It also delivers the most realistic spatial sound you'll hear in a pair of open-back headphones.

The headphone has an impedance of 300 Ohms, so it requires a high-quality headphone amplifier that can drive it at the right levels, without distortion. A balanced connection is recommended because it will increase the power output and enhance the overall sound quality.

These headphones are designed for professional use. They have a metal frame and a mixture of plastic and leather padding. The design is simple and doesn't look extravagant, but the quality of the headphones and their build are superb. They come with a carrying case, an additional audio cable and an adapter from 1/4" to 1-/8" adapter.

With an unison sound profile, the HD 800 S reproduces natural instruments and vocals, even though they are somewhat light on bass. The open-back design creates a wide out-of-head soundstage. The treble sound quality is superb, with only minor dips and peaks. The treble area is extremely linear, which means you won't have issues with cutting sibilants, or the upper sound of the drum snare.

Despite not having a loud bass, they can still deliver impact and dynamism when required. They'll still be a great choice for those who like listening to rock music with strong basslines, however they may not sound as fun as some of the other models on this list, such as the HiFiMan Arya.

In the mids, these Sennheiser headphones are hard to beat. They're very straight and have a slight slop in the upper mids, which will not be noticed by most listeners. They also reproduce precise time gradations of vocals which is a major benefit.

The HD 800 S are a pair of exceptional headphones, ideal for audiophiles and professionals. Their outstanding sonic performance and comfortable fitting make them a great option. They are expensive, but you're paying for a pair of headphones that will last for many years to come and perform well in any environment.

Anker Soundcore Life q20

The Anker Soundcore Q20 is a great set of headphones for anyone looking to kill time or simply want an affordable pair of headphones that block out noise. The headphones come with a basic case that will protect them when you throw them into the bag. The battery will last for several long-haul flights. Their ANC does a good job of blocking out chattering passengers and engine rumbles when on a plane, though their audio profile is a little warmer and bass-heavy.

The Life Q20's controls are simple to use and are well-marked. On headset shop , there are buttons for pairing and powering up the headphones as well as turning on and off the active noise cancellation. On the right ear cup you'll find controls for playing back media that include a multi-function switch that allows you to activate the voice assistant on your phone and switch on Anker's BassUp feature (more on this later). The built-in mic can be used to make calls using hands-free technology.

Anker's Soundcore Life Q20 headphone offers a deep immersive listening experience thanks to its custom 40 mm dynamic driver, which is certified Hi-Res audio. The headphones feature a treble range that reaches up to 40 kHz. Their active noise cancellation is designed to filter out a wide range of mid- and low-frequency sound.

One thing to remember about the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 is that it doesn't support aptX, which is a disappointment. This means that you won't be capable of taking advantage of the superior codec's lower latency when you're playing games on your PC.

The Life Q20's headband and memory foam ear cups are comfortable enough to wear for long periods without discomfort. The earcups can be rotated to accommodate your unique head shape. You can also enjoy your music with a 3.5mm cable, and a microUSB cable is included to charge the battery.
