At only 250g, they're light for over-ear ANC headsets. They're extremely comfortable to wear, no matter if you're reading or listening to a book. The headband is soft, and it has the same design of a friction rod as the Grado Labs SR60x that prevents your ears from getting too cold.

The WH-1000XM5 comes with a distinct sound signature that has been created to please people who listen to music for pleasure as also serious audiophiles. It is tuned with a slight increase in bass, however it's not abrasive or blazing. They have a wide and open soundstage with good instrument separation, which allows you to hear specifics in your music. The earcups come with touch controls that are intuitive and responsive. Swipe forward to play the next track, then back to listen to the previous one and then up and down to adjust the volume. The headphones can connect to two devices at once and will automatically stop playback whenever you remove them from your head, thanks to the built-in sensor. You can turn on ambient mode by placing your palm on the right ear cup. This lets you hear the sounds around you without having to take off the headphones.

They can also be paired with your voice assistant. Bluetooth low-energy is also available, as is high-resolution audio (via LDAC). The headphones come with a carry case made of premium fabric, and the USB-C charging cable. The headphones work with most Android and iOS smartphones, as well as with computers running Windows and macOS. The battery life of the WH-1000XM5 is exceptional. In our most basic test, we were able to get 31 hours and 53 minutes with ANC switched on which is more than Sony's advertised battery duration of 30 hours.

The WH-1000XM5's microphone performance on calls is superb and there's not any muffled or static-y audio in the background. Noise-canceling is also excellent, and these headphones are great for public transportation or the office.

The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2 is a major upgrade over its predecessor. It has a host of new features and performance. The Bowers & Wilkins S2 offers premium performance and features, including 24-bit wireless streaming, active noise cancellation optimized and clear voice calls on any compatible mobile or tablet. The 40mm drivers, that are custom-designed and angled inside each earcup, provide a more complete and focused listening experience. Six carefully placed microphones offer excellent call clarity even in noisy environments. An inline remote and microphone lets you manage your calls and music on any device compatible with it.

Like the PX7's original design, these headphones are sleek and elegant with accent rings on each earcup, and a silver sheen on the headband. go to website are cushioned with memory foam and fit comfortably on the cranium but never feel tight. The redesigned shape and form took a long time to perfect, delivering a comfortable clamping force that doesn't press too hard on my own cranium that is rotund.

They are 2 ounces lighter (or 307g) and a little thinner than the Sony WH1000XM5. They're light enough for carrying in your bag or backpack without any discomfort, and they'll stay comfortable in your hand during long listening sessions. A sturdy hinge on the back of the headband allows you to fold them up for easy transport in an enclosed case.

They're powered by Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive support which is great for both high-resolution audio and precise video sync. The included 3.5mm cord connects to the USB-C port that is located on the right earcup. The status indicator on the earphone is a nice addition. It flashes green to signal rapid charging, and solid blue to indicate Bluetooth pairing.

The B&W app has similar controls to the buttons on the hardware - bass and treble adjustment and assigning action buttons, wear detection, cycle through ANC modes and more. When you listen to music on your iPhone, the app displays album covers and track titles. Some popular features like music presets and a soundscapes mode are missing, however.

Sennheiser HD 800 S

The HD 800 S is the successor to the legendary headphones made by Sennheiser, and it is meant to meet the highest expectations. Its technical construction was designed to give an incredible detail resolution that encompasses the entire frequency spectrum, dynamic range and stereo panorama. It also delivers the most realistic spatial sound you'll hear on a pair of open-back headphones.

The headphone has a 300 ohm impedance, so a good headphone amplifier will be needed to operate it at the right levels without distortion. A balanced connection is recommended, as this will double the power output and enhance the overall sound quality.

These headphones are made for professional use. They have a metal frame and a mix of leather and plastic padding. The design is simple and doesn't look extravagant however the quality of the headphones and their build are superb. They come with a carry case, an extra audio cable and an 1/4" to 1-/8" adapter.

The HD 800 S has a neutral sound that reproduces instruments and vocals with naturality, though they are a little light on bass. The open-back design results in a spacious, out-of-head soundstage. Their treble performance is excellent, with only minor peaks and dips. The treble region also has a linear quality, so you will not have issues with piercingsibilants or even the upper bite of a drum snare.

They still have the ability to deliver, dynamism and impact when needed despite the lack of a loud low-end. They'll still be enjoyable for those who love listening to rock music with strong basslines, however they may not be like some of the other models on this list such as the HiFiMan Arya.

These Sennheiser headphones have a wonderful mid-range. They are extremely linear and have a slight scoop in the upper mids which will not be noticed by most listeners. They also have the ability to reproduce precise time gradations of vocals, which is a big benefit.

The HD 800 S are a pair of exceptional headphones, ideal for audiophiles and professionals. Their impressive sonic performance and comfortable fit make them an excellent option. They're costly however you're buying a pair of headphones that will last for many years to be able to perform well in any situation.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20

The Anker Soundcore Life Q20 are a decent pair of headphones that can provide the perfect solution for anyone who needs to kill some time or just wants an affordable pair of noise-cancelling headphones. The headphones come with a basic case that protects them when you throw them into bags. Their battery can last multiple long-haul flights. The ANC works well to block out loud passengers and engine rumbles, however their audio profile is a bit warmer and bass-heavy.

The Life Q20's controls can be easy to use and clearly marked. On the left earcup, you'll find buttons to pair and power up the headphones as well as turning on and off the active noise cancellation. On the right ear cup, you'll find controls for playing back media that include a multi-function switch which lets you turn on the voice assistant on your phone and switch on Anker's BassUp feature (more on this later). The built-in mic can be used to make hands-free phone calls.

Anker's Soundcore Life Q20 headphones offer an immersive and rich listening experience due to the custom 40mm dynamic drivers that offer certified Hi-Res Audio.
