Sony WH-1000XM5
The WH-1000XM5 headphones from Sony are the most recent upgrade to their top-of-the-line noise cancellation lineup. They have a fresh new design, improved ANC, and many of the same features as their predecessors, but with better materials and slightly higher-quality sound.
At just 250g, they're light for over-ear ANC headsets. This makes them extremely comfortable to wear for long periods of time, even if you're listening to a podcast or book. The headband has a friction-rod design that is similar to the Grado Labs SR60x, which prevents your ears getting too cold.
With an audio quality that is able to please those who enjoy music casually and audiophiles, WH-1000XM5's signature is tuned to have a slight emphasis on bass, but it isn't overpowering or harsh. The earphones feature a wide and spacious soundstage, with good separation of instruments. This allows you to listen to the subtleties of your music. The earcups also feature control buttons that are easy to use. Swipe forward to play the next track, reverse to hear the previous track and then up and down to regulate the volume. The headphones can be used for connecting to two devices at once and thanks to a built-in sensor, they will automatically pause the playback when removed from your head. You can also turn on ambient mode by placing your palm on the right earcup that lets you hear what's going on around you without removing the headphones.
Other useful features include the ability to pair them with your voice assistant, Bluetooth low-energy, and support for hi-res audio (via LDAC). The headphones come with a carry case made of premium fabric, and the USB-C charging cable. The headphones work with the majority of Android and iOS smartphones, as well as with computers operating Windows and macOS. The battery longevity of the WH1000XM5 is impressive. In our test of the standard battery we had 31 hours and 53 minute with the ANC on, which was better than Sony's advertised 30 hour battery life.
The WH1000XM5 is a great mic for voice calls. There is no muffled or static sound in the background. Noise cancellation is also great and these headphones are perfect for public transportation or the office.

Like the PX7's original design These headphones have elegant and refined with accent rings around each earcup, and an elegant silver sheen on the headband. The memory foam earcups fit well but not too tight on the cranium. The redesigned form and shape took many months to perfect, delivering an incredibly comfortable clamping force that doesn't push too hard, even on my own cranium that is rotund.
At 10.8 ounces (or 307g) They weigh 2 ounces lighter that the Sony WH-1000XM5, as well as a touch smaller. They're light enough to carry in your bag or backpack without much discomfort, and they'll stay comfortable in your hand during long listening sessions. The 3.5mm cord connects to the USB-C port located on the right earcup. The headphone's status indicator is an excellent gesture that flashes green to indicate a rapid charge, and solid blue when Bluetooth pairing is in use.
The B&W App provides the same control options that the hardware onboard buttons offer including bass and treble adjustment, action button assignments, wear detection, cycling through ANC modes and more. When you listen to music on your iPhone the app displays album cover and track titles. However, popular extras like music presets or a soundscapes feature are not available.
Sennheiser HD 800 S
The HD 800 S is the successor of the iconic headphones from Sennheiser and is meant to meet the most demanding requirements. The design and construction of the headphones is optimized to give a detail resolution that encompasses all of the frequency spectrum as well as dynamic range and stereo panorama. It also provides the most realistic sound you'll hear on a pair of open-back headphones.
The headphone has an impedance of 300 ohms therefore it requires a premium headphone amplifier that can drive it at the desired levels without distortion. A balanced connection is recommended, since this can double the power output and increase the overall sound quality.
The headphones are designed for professional use and have a sturdy steel frame with a mix of leather and plastic. The design is minimalist and doesn't appear like the most expensive pair of headphones, but they feel premium in the palm and are well-built. They come with a carry pouch and an additional audio cable and an 1/4" to 1/8" adapter.
The HD 800 S has a neutral sound that reproduces instruments and vocals with naturality, however they are less bass-y. This is because the open-back design creates a spacious and out-of-head, passive soundstage. The treble performance is outstanding with only minor peaks and dips. The treble region also is linear which means you won't have issues with piercingsibilants or the upper bite of the drum snare.
Despite not having a booming bass, they can still produce a punch and dynamism when needed. They'll still be a great choice for those who like listening to rock music with powerful basslines, but they may not be as fun as some of the other models on this list, such as the HiFiMan Arya.
In the mids they are Sennheiser headphones are hard to beat. They're very straight and have a slight slop in the upper mids, which shouldn't be noticeable to most listeners. They also reproduce precise time gradations in vocals which is a huge benefit.
The HD 800 S are a pair exceptional headphones, perfect for audiophiles and professionals. Their impressive sonic performance and comfortable fitting make them a great option. They're expensive, but you're paying for headphones that will last for many years to come and perform well in any setting.
Anker Soundcore Life Q20
The Anker Soundcore Life Q20 are a good pair of headphones that will provide the perfect solution for anyone looking to kill some time or simply needs a cheap pair of noise-cancelling headphones. The headphones come with a simple bag that protects them when you throw them into bags. The battery will last for several long-haul flights. Their ANC does a great job of blocking out chattering seatmates and engine rumbles from an airplane, although their audio profile is a bit warmer and bass-heavy.
The Life Q20's controls are easy to navigate and well-marked. On the left earcup, there are buttons to pair and power up the headphones, as well as turning on or off the active noise cancellation. On the right earcup you'll find media playback controls that include a multi-function switch that allows you to activate the voice assistant on your phone and enable Anker's BassUp feature (more on that later). The built-in microphone can be used to make phone calls hands-free.
Anker's Soundcore Life Q20 headphones deliver a rich and immersive listening experience, due to the custom 40 mm dynamic drivers that offer certified Hi-Res Audio. With a treble that extends up to 40 kHz the headphones can provide outstanding clarity and detail, as their hybrid active noise cancelling technology is designed to filter out a wide range of mid- and low-frequency sounds.
One thing to keep in mind about the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 is that it doesn't support the aptX codec, which is disappointing. This means that you will not be able to take advantage of the better codes' lower latency while playing on your computer.
The Life Q20's headband as well as memory foam earcups are soft enough to wear for long periods without discomfort. The ear cups also rotate to adjust to the shape of your head. The included 3.5mm audio cable allows you to listen to music while charging the battery.
