From All Over The Web From The Web: 20 Awesome Infographics About Window Repairs
Window Repairs Can Save Homeowners Time and Money

Window repairs can cut down on time and cost for homeowners. But, there are times when replacing windows that are old is more cost-effective.

Stray baseballs and thrown projectiles often cause cracks or holes in windows. These are usually simple fixes with the right tools.

However, if the frame of the window is getting rotten, it's best to replace the entire window.

Broken or cracked glass

A bad storm or a stray piece of debris from the lawnmowers, or your favorite vase pushed down too hard could crack the glass in your windows. You can prevent cracks from getting more severe by spending a little extra time and effort. This will save you money on replacement glass.

First, you must remove the broken glass. Wearing gloves, carefully cut off any molding, trim or glazing putty that holds the glass in place. You may have to use a utility knife to get rid of any glass fragments that are stuck in the frame.

After taking the window off, clean the area around it and the surface thoroughly. This will help prevent the glue used to put the glass back in place from leaking and causing more damage. You'll also want to ensure that the new glass is a good fit. If the new glass is larger than the prior piece, you will need to make use of a circular saw or mitersaw to cut it down.

Once your surface has been cleaned and dried, you can apply a glass adhesive made specifically for windows. Then, you can reinstall the glass into your window sash. Be careful not to bend the glass or moving it during this process. This could cause the cracks to get deeper.

Then, you can apply a product like Loctite Super Glue Glass to fill the crack and seal it. It's designed to work on all types of glass including tinted ones. Be aware that this type of fix will not completely cover the crack, therefore it's not a good option for windows that are easily visible from the outside.

Another option is epoxy, which is a bit more time-consuming to apply but provides the most significant seal, and can make your cracked window glass almost invisible. Before applying epoxy, you'll need to clean your glass and the area around it thoroughly. Also, you'll need be prepared for any sudden weather changes which could cause the cracks to expand. If you're not comfortable with these DIY repair methods or if your glass is especially large or a double-paned window is best to contact a professional to have a professional repair.

Sashes that won't let you open

A window that will not stay up for long can be more than an inconvenience and could be dangerous. Double- and single-hung windows have balancing mechanisms to prevent the sash from sliding up and down within the jambs. However the mechanism can be damaged or disconnected. Check the balance bar and pivot shoe to determine if either or both have become dislodged. If they have, you will have to replace them in order for the sash to remain in place.

Moisture can cause cycles of expansion and contraction in the frames of sash windows that are made of timber. As time passes, this can cause joints to become loose in the frame and cause them to become stuck. You may be able to fix this without removing the window by putting a knife around the joints of the frame and slicing them open. If the wood appears to be swelling, it's usually caused by missing flashing on the exterior of your home that allows water to get into the frame.

A sash cable that has snapped is another reason that can cause a window not opening. You can try to reattach the cord with pliers and by slipping the sash back into its normal position. If the cord has snapped completely, you'll have to replace it.

Paint can also cause a window to bind and become difficult to move. If you notice that the sash channel on a double-hung window is closed with paint and you want to break the bond by scoring the paint using a knife and then trying to move it. If this fails then you'll need to remove the sash and then cut the line between the sash stop, parting strip or jamb on both sides of the window (Photo 1).

The sash shoes that are used in single-hung windows are typically made from plastic or metal. They come with a U-shaped slot them that is locked when the shoe is in its usual position in the sash. To unlock upvc repairs , use a screwdriver to turn the slot so that it is facing the opposite direction (Photo 2). You can then move the sash back and forward to check if it works properly.

Rotting Wood

Wood rot isn't only visually unattractive, but it can be a serious threat to the structural integrity of the area it has invaded. The fungus that causes it feeds on moisture and turns wooden beams, walls, and joists to a wet mush. To prevent rot, you should ensure that your home is maintained and that areas that are exposed to the elements are protected. Even if you are vigilant any missed painting session, clogged rain gutter, or minor roof leak can expose your windows or porch columns and other components of the house to decaying organisms.

The majority of wood decays are caused by excessive moisture, which is often caused by condensation or rainwater seepage. The latter can occur when a damp-proof course is not installed or is damaged, or when internal materials such as plaster and drywall become affected by leaky pipes, appliances and fixtures.

The first step to repair decay is to remove the old material. This is typically done using a prybar, although using a combination of hammer as well as chisel may be necessary for the most difficult spots. After the decayed pieces of wood are removed, the hole must be filled and sealed. There are a variety of wood fillers to choose from, and the best product will depend on the amount of work you wish to do, how deep the hole is, and how much of the original frame can be saved.

If the rot is too extensive for a filler that is simple, then you'll have to replace the damaged area. This can be done either by hiring a professional, or doing it yourself. This is a more complicated task that requires the expertise of a carpenter to complete. If you're unsure of your skills at DIY it is recommended to call in a professional.

While repairing wood that is rotting is always a possibility but it's much easier (and less expensive) to prevent it in the beginning. Prevention measures include sealing cracks around windows scraping and repainting caulk, and installing drip edges on the roof to prevent water from splashing up onto the trim on the exterior. You should also check for signs of excess humidity around your windows and consider a dehumidifier to help keep the levels of moisture in check.

Dirty Seals

Water dripping from or around a window is likely to be the most obvious indication that the seals of windows are shrinking. It's easy to spot, however it's often hidden behind the wall. This can result in soft wood, mold, or even structural damage in your RV. The best way to protect your windows is to keep them clean by performing regular cleaning and inspection checks. You can identify soft spots by pressing gently on the seal trim while looking.

The windows that are stained with fog can be an indication of a weak seal. They may not be structurally damaging or causing your electricity bills to rise, but they hinder the aesthetics of your RV.

The failure of window seals is largely caused by weather damage, with seals expanding in hot temperatures, and shrinking in colder ones. This can be mitigated by storing your camper under cover and keeping it out of the direct sunlight. Also, a simple car wash can help to keep the salt from damaging the rubber seals on your windows.

Other causes of window seal failure include scrubbing the seals using brushes and washrags that contain cleaning agents that break down the rubber. Seals can become brittle and more susceptible to cracking. The best way to prevent this is to avoid using harsh cleaners on your windows and to keep the windows and sash tracks clean with a dry brush.

This is the easiest and cheapest way to protect the windows of your RV. It also gives you the opportunity to check the condition of the window seals and make repairs, which can help prevent costly problems in the future.

Having your window seals lubricated with 303 Protectant Spray or replaced is a more costly fix than simply resealing your sash, however it is nevertheless much cheaper than repairing the water damage that is caused by seals that fail. If you're willing to invest some time, then this is an easy DIY project that will greatly prolong the life of your RV's windows, and save you money in the long run.
