Lamarck membagi invertebrata ke dalam dua kelompok yaitu Insecta (serangga) dan Vermes (cacing). Tapi sekarang, invertebrata diklasifikasikan ke dalam lebih dari 30 sub-fila mulai dari organisme yang simpel seperti porifera dan cacing pipih hingga organisme yang lebih kompleks seperti mollusca, echinodermata, arthropoda, dan lain-lain.

Echinodermata
Mollusca
Nemathelminthes
Platyhelminthes
Porifera
Penelitian lebih lanjut dalam bidang taksonomi menunjukkan bahwa banyak hewan invertebrata yang berkerabat lebih dekat dengan vertebrata daripada dengan sesama invertebrata.
Ciri cirinya hewan ini tidak mempunyai tulang belakang.
