Q3: What is a Chipko Movement? Describe the problem and its consequence related to this movement.
Answer : * The Chipko Movement is a non-violent resistance aiming to protect India's forests.
* The movement began in the 1970s in response to the increasing destruction of forests for commerce and industry.
* The name of the movementcomes from the word 'embrace', as the villagers hugged the trees, and prevented the contractors' from felling them.
The outcomes (consequences ) were-
1. The goverment issued a ban on felling the trees in the Himalayan region for 15years until the green cover was fully restored.
2. It became a symbol of many popular movement that emerged in different partsof country during 1970s and later.

Answer : # over utilization of ground water - The most severe consequence of excessive groundwater pumping is that the water table, below which the ground is saturated
with water, can be lowered. For water to be withdrawn from the ground, water must be pumped from a well that reaches
below the water table.
