Demonology dari Mesopotamia lama
A. Letak geografis
Mesopotamia berada di lembah sungai Eufrat dan Tigris yang saat ini mencakup beberapa negara antara lain sebagian besar Irak, Syria, Iran serta Turki Tenggara.
B. Kepercayaan dan Mitologi
Dalam mitologi Mesopotamia lama, ada tujuh dewa kejahatan, yang dikenal dengan shedu.
1. Shedu digambarkan sebagai banteng jantan bersayap yang digunakan sebagai jin untuk menjaga istana.
Demon-demon ini banyak dikatakan berasal dari dunia bawah. Beberapa penyakit dikaitkan dengan mereka, terutama yang berhubungan dengan otak dan faktor internal tubuh.
*Contoh: katalepsi, epilepsi, sakit kepala, bahkan mimpi buruk.
2. Shabriri
Shabriri adalah demon yang menyebabkan kebutaan. Arti Shabriri secara harafiah adalah cahaya yang silau. Shabriri ini akan beristirahat di permukaan air yang tidak ditutup saat malam. Siapapun yang meminum air itu akan menjadi buta.
3. Asag
Demon Asag ini bisa mendidihkan air sungai sampai ikannya matang.
Alat yang dipercaya dapat membunuh demon asag adalah shahrur. Sharur berarti penghancur ribuan makhluk, dimiliki oleh Dewa Ninurta.
Pada zaman ini orang-orang yang ahli dalam hal pengusiran demon adalah orang Esseni, sebuah sekte Yahudi yang hidup di tepi Laut Mati pada 65-an SM hingga 70-an M.
