There've been many different fashions in history, each different because of the way clothes are developed. The articles: Ready-Made Clothing, Tailoring, and Advancements in Modern Clothing show the relations between clothing styles and their development. Three ways clothing developments pertain to clothing styles are mass produced clothing, tailoring, and computer-aided design
To get started, mass produced clothing is what replaced the more time consuming, tailoring. Mass produced clothing is both liked and disliked by people. "Ready-made articles of clothing were portrayed as modern and fashionable, if not sturdy" (National Institute of Standards and Technology). Some people believed this way of clothing development is fashionable, since the style of the clothes that are mass produced were popular and commonly worn. There were those who disliked this way of clothing development as well. In contrast, others saw the mass produced clothing as a "loss of individuality" (National Institute of Standards and Technology). These people disliked this clothing development because its clothing styles were worn by so many. The clothing development of ready-made clothing has a style that is both liked and disliked by people.
Now for tailoring, which is by hand, and the oldest way of developing clothes. In the days of tailoring, people customized their clothing as a way of showing their wealth. These designs "took hours to complete and were a sign of the wearer's wealth" (Tailoring). Since this type of clothing development was so costly and time consuming, those who could afford it made the most out of it by making their own designs. The designs of the clothing made are completely up to the customer. "Clothing became a natural extension of the body rather than its decoration or disguise" (Tailoring). This clothing development gives freedom to the wearers, allowing them to express themselves through their clothing. Though the development of clothing in tailoring is both costly and expensive, this is made up for by the freedom it gives to the wearer.
And lastly, computer-aided design, the most accurate way of developing clothes in terms of size. computer-aided design makes the designing of clothing much easier compared to ready-made clothing and tailoring. Computer aided design has the ability "to view designs of clothing on virtual models of various shapes and sizes" (Kazanjian). This makes the clothing designs much more accurate, and the right fit for the wearer. With computer-aided design, you can view the designs of the clothing before it's actually made.
