Are You Responsible For An Audi G28 Budget? 10 Fascinating Ways To Spend Your Money
How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins, and they have different functions but the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly when they're an Bosch sensor like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues with your vehicle. audi battery key replacement 's an essential component of the transmission in your Audi because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. If the sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is a typical part that is found across the Audi 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
