Majority white newsrooms are constantly creating journalism that is about cultural phenomena that Black people create without discussing or including black people in their stories. Consider that so much of the writing about the slang term "f-boy" implicitly and explicitly concentrated on affluent white twenty-somethings usage of the term despite the word having originated in black communities in Harlem and was used by internationally acclaimed rapper Cam'ron. Logic would suggest that if one is truly interested in unpacking the meaning of f-boy that considering Cam'ron or people who have been acquainted with him might be a useful lead. I don't know why or how so much writing about Black cultural phenomena ends up centering white people's lives and worldviews but what I do know is that the resulting journalism frequently fails in regards to accuracy. Such journalism also asserts the notion that white viewpoints and ideas about black people and black cultural production are more important that black ones.

Black lives don't matter to white critics but the ability to consume black art the way they want to does.

Black lives and humanity don't matter to white critics as much as the ability to. Black lives and humanity doesn't matter to white critics. You don't get to engage a culture on your terms, you engage a culture on the terms on that culture. Anything less is usurpation. Anything less than that is to assert a mentality born out of histories of colonization. Anything less than that is to say "I will seize what I want from whomever I want." You all need to interrogate your internalized white supremacy. Effing heavily with somebody's art but not effing with their humanity.
