How to Replace a Saab 9-3 Key
The Saab 9-3 is a fantastic car that has a lot of appeal for drivers. It offers good visibility and a strong performance engine. It has a high safety rating.
It is important that you have two keys that are compatible for your vehicle. It can be expensive to replace a key in the event that you lose it.
How to Replace the Ignition Key in the Saab9-3
If your car's keys won't turn in the ignition, you need to replace it. This guide will explain how to replace the ignition key on the Saab 9-3. You'll need a replacement key as well as a reprogrammable battery and a new key-fob cover.
Contrary to earlier models, modern Saab cars have a transponder in the key-fob instead of a physical key made of metal to unlock and start the vehicle. The problem with this is that the reprogrammable battery on the key-fob will wear out and not hold a charge for long. This is particularly the case if you use the same key in the same lock.
The good part is that the battery can be replaced quite easily by a professional locksmith. If you have the proper tools, and a little patience you can do it yourself. The first step is taking the key-fob from its case. Insert flatheads into the slot in the middle of your case. You will need to work slowly, as the plastic is very thin and can be damaged easily.
Once the case has been opened, you can create the new key by combining the lower portion of the old key along with transponder and banana. This will ensure that the new key is mated to the CIM correctly, which could make a huge difference when replacing the sole key for your Saab 9-3.
How do I replace the ignition Key on a Saab 900
If you don't have two keys you will need remove the dashboard and steering wheel for access to the ignition. Start by disconnecting your negative battery cable. Once the battery is disconnected, you are able to remove the dashboard and trim pieces that surround the steering wheel. Once the dash has been removed, you can insert a screwdriver into the hole in the back of the ignition switch and take it out.
The ignition cylinder is fitted with a key lock, which can stop the vehicle from starting if you don't have the key inside it. If the ignition switch on your 900 doesn't work properly, you should check whether the key is within the lock or stuck inside the ignition barrel. It is also recommended to rotate your keys and keep them clean to prevent bending.
Saab cars differ from other cars because they don't use traditional metal keys. Instead, the car detects the electronic signals from the key fob through a special chip in it.
If you lose your sole working key fob the dealer will charge you top dollar for replacing the computer module (known as the CIM). But we can reprogram your computer's EEPROM, and then prepare it to accept new keys without replacing it. This can save you more than 50% of what the dealer charges! This is the SAAB Key PROGRAM. The metal portion of the classic Saab keys is simple to copy and does not pose a significant threat to vehicle theft. The electronic part of the key-fob is equipped with a chip that can recognize the car when the key is put in the ignition switch.
Saab's anti-theft system has relied on this technology for over a decade. It's not as good as an actual lock on the door however it makes the process of stealing your vehicle more difficult. Every Saab owner must keep a spare Saab key in their car.
saab spare key of new Saabs come with two keys from the factory, but you can buy more keys from an authorized dealer using a handheld computer called a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception is for NG 9-3 cars, that have modern, more advanced features that require a separate key-fob and work through a different process.
If you lose all keys in the event of a loss, the dealer will replace your CIM or TWICE modules and charge a premium for it. We can however reprogram the EEPROM in your existing computer and make it accept new keys, without replacing the expensive modules.
