"Ask Me Anything": Ten Responses To Your Questions About Audi G28
How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). audi key replacement near me must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you have any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your Audi since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is turning. If the sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is the same across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du So, you may find them in wrecking yards.
