You'll must replace your car key if it won't turn. This guide will explain how to replace the ignition key on a Saab 9-3. You will have to replace the key, get an updated reprogrammable phone, and purchase a new case for your key-fob.

The majority of modern Saab models use a transponder instead of a traditional key to unlock the vehicle and allow it to start. The problem with this is that the reprogrammable battery on the key-fob will eventually wear out and lose charge for long. This is especially relevant if you continue to use the same key for the same lock.

A professional locksmith can replace the battery quite easily. You can also do it yourself if have the right tools and a bit of patience. The first step is taking the key-fob out. Insert flatheads into the slot that is in the middle of your case. The plastic is thin, and can easily be damaged.

Once the case has been opened, you can create the new key by combining lower part of old key with the transponder and banana. This will ensure that the new key is properly mated to your CIM, which can make a big difference when replacing the sole key of your Saab 9-3.

Once the battery is disconnected, you can remove the trim and dashboard pieces around the steering wheel. After the dashboard has been removed, you can insert an opening with a screwdriver behind the ignition switch.

The ignition cylinder is fitted with a lock for keys that can stop the vehicle from starting if you don't have a key. If the ignition switch of your 900 isn't functioning, check the key to determine whether it's inside the lock or in the ignition barrel. You should also rotate your keys and keep them clean to avoid breaking.

Saab cars differ from other vehicles because they don't have traditional metal keys. Instead, the car is able to recognize the key fob's electric signals through a special chip embedded in it.

If you lose just one functioning key fob, your dealer will charge you an extra fee to replace your computer module (also known as the CIM). However, we can reprogram the existing computer's EEPROM to prepare it to accept new keys without replacing it. This will save you over 50% of the price the dealer charges! Saab has relied on the technology of this anti-theft device for more than 10 years. It's not as efficient as a door lock, but it makes stealing your car more difficult. Every Saab owner must keep an extra Saab key in their vehicle.

Most new Saabs come with two keys at the factory, but you can add more at an agent using a handheld computer known as Tech-2. Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception to this rule is the NG 9-3 vehicles that have more modern, newer features that require a key-fob.

The dealer will replace the CIM or TWICE module of those vehicles if all keys are lost. They'll charge you a premium for doing it. However, we can reprogram the EEPROM in your existing computer and make it accept new keys, and not replace the expensive modules.
