Medication For Autism and ADHD
Many adults and children with autism take psychotropic medication. Some of these medications can help ease the irritability and severe disruptive behaviours that sometimes are common in ADHD.
The use of medications for ADHD can significantly improve autism's primary symptoms and decrease inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. They can also help reduce problematic behaviors like aggression and self-injury, licking and picking, trichotillomania, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
Stimulants
Autism can be a very difficult condition for both parents and children. However, medication is not always the answer. While medication can help manage certain conditions that are commonly associated with autism and enhance overall functioning, they won't cure or make your child "normal."
Stimulants are commonly prescribed for ADHD. It's not uncommon for kids with autism to have ADHD and research has shown that stimulants can improve the core ADHD symptoms in these kids, including hyperactivity inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Methylphenidate (Ritalin) is the most commonly used stimulant. It works by increasing the production of dopamine in your brain. This neurotransmitter aids in controlling mood, behavior, as well as reward systems.
Many parents are concerned about the effects of psychotropic medications on their children. Critics call them chemical straitjackets, making it easier for schools and parents to handle difficult behavior. Some people also argue that the drugs don't solve the root issues that cause autistic children much stress. They include social interaction issues, anxiety and repetitive, recurrent behavior that is restricted.
But if your child has autism and ADHD, a study that was published in the journal Pediatrics found that stimulantswhich include methylphenidate as well as dextroamphetamine -- work in reducing the primary ADHD symptoms that may interfere with school, work and family life. These drugs also appear to decrease irritability.
In the same study, it was discovered that atypical Antipsychotics like Risperidone and Aripiprazole may aid in reducing irritability in some children suffering from ADHD and autism. This is a preliminary result. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and determine if these medications are able to help with other kinds of irritability, like aggression or injuries.
A second concern is that the current studies don't look at long-term use or other crucial factors, like the possibility of abuse. Some studies are small or use different methods than other. This makes it difficult to compare results. But if your child has ADHD and autism, it's worth a discussion with your doctor to determine the right medication for him or her.
Medication is an instrument that is beneficial in managing symptoms and improving the quality of life in families affected by autism and ADHD, but it is not an alternative to therapy or other treatments. Your doctor will collaborate with you to determine the best dosage and medication to reduce the risk of side effects and ensure it's working for your child. add adult medications will benefit from medication to improve him or her concentrate and be more productive at home and at school, and fully participate in the therapies designed to help treat autism. Your child will be able to make the biggest advancements possible.
