Troubleshooting Problems With BMW Keys
Prior to the i8 and 7 Series, BMW keys were rather clunky black rectangles that needed to be put into the ignition slot to unlock and start the car. But that all changed when the digital keys came out.
But can it be hacked? And can you use a non-genuine keyfob to activate Comfort Access in your BMW?
Keyless entry
If you've driven a BMW for some time you're probably familiar with keyless entry and remote start. These features make your drive more convenient, and also keep you safer. You can also lock and unlock your car from the comfort of your home provided you have the appropriate apps on your phone. These key fobs are not without their quirks, just as with any new technology.
Some BMW owners are concerned about, for example, whether their key fobs can be compromised. BMWs were designed with security and therefore are nearly impossible to hack. The system works by sending a unique identification signal from your fob to the car, which is then checked and then allowed to unlock. This means that a third party can't duplicate or utilize a signal amplifier to access your vehicle.
Another issue that people ask is whether or not the BMW fob sleeps. The fob will go into sleep if it's not operated for a predetermined amount of time. This is done to conserve battery power and prevent the car from opening when it's not supposed. However the key fob will function in the ignition when it's repeatedly pressed.
The BMW key fob is not only a keyless entry, can also lock and unlock a car or activate automatic transmission on cars that have manual shifting. The BMW key fob will also control some of the vehicle's comfort functions including seat, mirror and adjustments to the steering wheel. It can also save personal settings like the radio presets, seat positions and many more functions.
The BMW key fob can be used to unlock the trunk or activate a push button starter in some models. Press the button on the bottom of the fob until you hear it beep. Then, you can insert the key into the trunk opener and pull it back to unlock the trunk. The BMW key fob also controls the vehicle's climate control and media system.
Electronic immobilizer
The engine immobilizer is a key security feature that can help prevent car theft by ensuring that only the correct key is used to start the car. It does this by checking that the key's code is identical to the one stored on the computer. The engine will only begin when the codes are identical. This system has been around for more than 20 years, and it has drastically reduced the rate of vehicle theft. It's also a good way to prevent hotwiring, which is the process of bypassing the ignition switch by connecting wires between the ignition coil and the fuel pump relay.
The immobilizer is part a key fob or key that has transponder. The chip transmits a passcode to the immobilizer system of the car that is integrated into the PCM, BCM, instrument cluster, smart junction box, or another module. The immobilizer unit checks the passcode and allows the engine to start if it is right.
Modern transponder chips and keys employ a cryptographic algorithm to ensure that the code is only transmitted once and only to the authorized key fob or key. These algorithms are designed to be difficult for hackers to decode. This technology guards against remote key replication, which is a common scenario when cars are taken.
It will sound an alarm when it is unable to recognize the code from the key or the key fob. It could also disable the ignition coils, fuel pumps, or injectors depending on the type of engine that is installed in your vehicle. The engine will be turned on for a few seconds and then stop which makes it impossible to drive the vehicle away.
Immobilizers are a great safety device that has reduced vehicle thefts by preventing hot wiring. However, it's not foolproof, and a lot of criminals have devised methods to get around the immobilizer. One of these methods is using a laptop to decode the cryptographic algorithm which can be done with an application that is specifically designed for this purpose.
Another method involves using a device to change the code on the transponder chip or key. You can purchase a "transponder-reader" online. These devices aren't an effective way of getting rid of the immobilizer, but they may aid in certain cases.
Replace the battery
If your BMW keyfob doesn't function as well as it once did it may be time to replace replacement batteries. The good news is that replacing the battery in your BMW is a simple procedure that will take no longer than 30 minutes. The first step is to remove the key made of metal from your fob. Then, press the key into a smaller section to unlock the backing of the fob. Next, remove the battery that was in use and replace it with a brand new one. You can find CR2450 batteries at most supermarkets and gas stations.
There are various ways to change the battery depending on the type of BMW key you have. For instance, if have the BMW Smart Key, it has a rechargeable battery that charges when inserted into the ignition. The battery isn't replaceable without cutting through the case. You'll need to contact your local BMW dealer.
Many BMW models made between 2011 and 2017 feature a sleek, slant-shaped battery which is also known as a watch battery. The battery can be replaced by pushing an appropriate button close to the point where the key slides out of the case before taking it off. You will see a small groove appear in the opening. Utilize a screwdriver, or valet key to turn the groove counterclockwise, removing the cover. Once the cover has been removed, you can take off the battery that is dead and replace it with a new one.
The range of the signal on your BMW key fob will typically decrease when the battery is failing. You should be able unlock your car from a distance between 30 to 60 feet. If you're unable to get closer than 20ft, it's probably time to replace your battery.
A battery that is damaged or depleted will also prevent the remote starter from working. This is a crucial safety feature in many vehicles, so you should change the battery as soon as you can. If you own a BMW with a push button start, you'll need go to the dealer to program the new key fob and then sync additional fobs to the vehicle.
