Adult ADHD Medication
If changes to the environment aren't enough to aid you in your success at school or work, you may benefit from medication. These medications may be short-acting or long-acting, and include methylphenidate (such as Ritalin), and amphetamines salts.
In the UK stimulants are the most common ADHD medication prescribed. They are first prescribed in the event of a condition that requires different medication.
Stimulants
Stimulants work by increasing the activity of brain regions that regulate behavior and attention. They help improve concentration, help focus the mind and reduce impulse behaviour. They are also referred to as psychostimulants or amphetamines and can be taken legally with prescription as ADHD medication. They are also abused as illegal substances such as methamphetamine and cocaine in order to boost energy and feelings of well-being.
The most commonly used stimulant for ADHD is methylphenidate, which you may have heard of by the brand name Ritalin. It increases activity in the brain regions that regulate attention and behavior which improves concentration and reduces impulsive and hyperactive behavior. It can be taken as immediate-release tablets taken 2-3 times a day, or as modified-release capsules that release the medication throughout the day.
Lisdexamfetamine stimulates certain regions of the brain, which increases concentration and helps focus the mind. It also reduces the impulsive behavior. If methylphenidate isn't working it is typically prescribed to adults, teens and children over five years old. Lisdexamfetamine is usually prescribed as immediate-release tablets which are taken two or three times per day. Atomoxetine differs from the other medicines above and is offered to adults, teens and children (aged 5+) who cannot use methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine because of side effects or other reasons. It is a selective Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI). iampsychiatry.uk increases the amount of noradrenaline which transmits messages between brain cells and improves the concentration and control of impulses. It is consumed as a tablet or oral solution once a day.
Many randomized controlled studies as also observational studies have been conducted to determine the benefits and harms that are associated with treatment for adult adhd. These studies have compared different medications with placebos or other drugs but not all included head-to-head studies. This study combines the results of these trials employing a method known as network meta-analysis. This is the largest study of ADHD to date, and it strengthens NICE's guidelines regarding prescribing medication for adults suffering from ADHD.
The results show that a large percentage of people suffering from ADHD will benefit from medication. But it is important to weigh the benefits and risks of taking it. Discuss this with your doctor and, if needed, implement measures to treat symptoms with other treatments such as therapy or lifestyle changes. It is important to identify medical conditions such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy that may cause or exacerbate ADHD symptoms. A thorough medical history and a thorough examination are crucial in assessing for possible causes of the symptoms. Patients who have a history excessive alcohol or drug use should be treated with extreme care. A referral to a specialist could be required. Patients with histories of developmental disorders or other serious mental health issues must be assessed more thoroughly and referred for specific tests and evaluations as necessary. This could include a thorough family history as genetic factors have been identified to be involved in ADHD.
