What to Do If Your Seat Ibiza Key Fob Stopped Working
Check these things if your key fob suddenly stopped working or isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle. It may be that the battery needs replacement or the electronic chip is faulty.
Seat's most popular model is the Ibiza that competes with the Renault Clio and Peugeot 208 in the supermini market. It's also a fantastic value.
Battery
The most frequent reason for a key fob not working is a dead battery. The battery that powers the coin in the fob is a 3V lithium button battery (CR 2032), which is available in many retail stores and on the internet. Replace the battery you have with one that is similar in size, shape and specification. Using a battery of a different design could harm the fob.
Metal clips hold the battery within the fob, which completes an electric circuit upon activation of the remote. They could cause a short if they are dirty or loose. This can stop the remote from functioning. Clean them with isopropyl alcohol or electronic cleaner.
To replace the battery, just open the fob by finding a gap between the two sides in which you can use a screwdriver or another device to pull it apart. Replace seat key cover with a brand new one. Make sure to install it in the same direction. The fob will then be shut automatically. After replacing the battery, it is important to test that the fob is functioning properly.
Water Damage
Water damage may be the cause for the key fob to stop working after you dropped it into a pool or washed it in the washer. The chip inside the key fob is protected by rubber seals, but prolonged exposure to water will affect the quality of these seals over time. Water also serves as a conductor, which can lead to short circuits within the key fob.
Fortunately, the key fob's battery is easy to replace. Using a small flat head screwdriver (or thumb nail) remove the cover of the key fob's battery compartment and insert a brand new button cell battery CR2025. Make sure that the polarity of the battery is facing upwards. Close the keyfob's battery compartment to reprogram the remote so that it works with your car.
If your key fob still has a problem after replacing the battery and reprogramming it, then it's possible that the receiver module has developed an issue. The receiver module is the component that receives signals from the key fob and relays them to your car to control the engine, ignition and central locking.
Faulty Chip
If your Seat Ibiza key fob stopped working, there could be an issue with the chip within it. This can happen if you drop it or get it wet. It can also happen if the buttons are worn out or damaged. You'll either have to replace your key fob, or have it repaired by professionals.
The key fob has been designed with rubber seals in order to prevent water from reaching the chip inside. It is susceptible to damage by submersion in salt water or exposed to water for long time. This could be triggered by swimming on the beach or by the rainstorm.
If you've been unable to fix the key fob on your Seat Ibiza and have tried every other method to repair it and still haven't succeeded, you might need to purchase a replacement. Depending on the brand and model of your car it can be affordable. It isn't easy to install. You'll need to know how to program the new key, so you should contact your dealer if possible.
Faulty Receiver Module
In rare cases, if the key fob has stopped functioning, even though all other steps have been taken (including replacement of batteries or programming it again) this could indicate a fault with the receiver module. It's the small black box inside the fob that transmits the signal that controls the keyless entry system in your car.
Dead coin batteries are a typical reason for the receiver module not functioning. This is the first thing to be replaced if this is the case. Check that the battery is of the same size specifications, voltage and specification as the previous one.
Water damage is a different issue. If your fob has been exposed to water that is clean from the tap or rain this shouldn't cause an issue. However, when it was exposed to salty, soapy or dirty water, then the chip inside may be damaged. Before you reuse the fob, it is advisable to open it up and check the mechanical components for signs of corrosion or damage. Verify the wiring to make sure that it's connected properly.
Radio Interference
If the key fob's signal is disrupted by interference, it can prevent the vehicle from responding to the remote control. This can be caused by a number of ways, including radio transmissions by other devices that operate on the same frequency as the keyfob. The signal could also be drowned out by signals that are too loud in power.
The most frequent reason for keys that do not work is a dead battery in the coin-cell. This should be checked first. If the battery for the key fob was replaced recently, but it is no longer able to function, this is another indicator that the battery is wearing out.
It is recommended to use a new battery when you need replacement and make sure that the correct size and voltage is employed. It is also advisable to ensure that the battery's polarity is facing the same direction when it is placed. This will prevent damage to the chip inside the key fob. If the battery has been damaged by water, the chip might need to be cleaned using isopropyl alcohol or electronic cleaner.
