Key Fob Replacement for the Seat Ibiza
The facelifted fifth generation Ibiza is an attractive contender in the supermini segment. It competes with the Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Ford Fiesta.
Make use of a small screwdriver with a flat head or a thumbnail (A) to open the battery compartment cover on the key fob (B). Replace the CR2025 batteries, making sure it is inserted in the proper direction.
Dead Coin Battery
The most common reason for a key fob that does not lock or unlock your vehicle is a dead coin battery. It will usually show indications before it dies, like a decrease in range or no power at all. It is simple to replace it with a new one (CR2025) from an area supermarket. Be aware that incorrect or unsuitable batteries can damage the key fob. Make sure that the battery you replace has the same size and voltage and that it is the same specification.
If your fob has been exposed to pure water, such as rainwater or soapy tap water, it is likely that corrosion has caused damage to the chip's electronic circuit. You can try cleaning the chip with alcohol or an electronic cleaner to try to see if this helps but it is likely that the chip has fried.
A new key fob is a simple solution. Most major car dealers offer key fobs and they can be installed by an experienced mechanic. They can also be bought on ebay. It is best to work on a work surface that has good lighting. This will make it easier to work on small parts inside. This will also help you to avoid putting anything back in the wrong location. Always work on your key fob in an area that is secure and safe.
Water Damage
You may think that your key fob is ruined if you drop it into the water or accidentally wash it. There's a chance. When the circuit board on the fob is exposed to water, it becomes conductor that shorts the components. It also speeds up the process of rust and corrosion.
Luckily, this is simple to fix. Find something absorbent to place inside the fob. A paper towel or tissue will work well. Use a cotton swab soaked in isopropyl for cleaning the circuit board as well as any other components. Let the fob dry out for several days in a dry, warm environment.
Replace the battery once the fob has dried by a new one that is the same dimensions and polarity ('+' (pointing upwards). It isn't easy to open the fob to access the battery but if you have a small screwdriver with a flat head at hand, it will slide in easily. After the fob is put back together, it should work like a normal. If it doesn't, then you'll have to reprogramme it or replace the receiver module.
Radio Interference
If a key fob is working correctly, it sends a radio frequency signal that is received by the module inside your car. However, if the signal is distorted in some way, your key fob won't perform as it should. This could be caused by objects, weather conditions or other transmitters operating in the same frequency range near your vehicle.
In this situation, it is best to replace the battery in your key fob. In this case, it would be best to replace the battery inside your key fob.
Some aftermarket LED lighting that utilizes the same frequency as a remote key fob can interfere with the signal and prevent it from reaching the receiver modules. The LED's light source must be switched off or changed to a different frequency in order to avoid interference.
If you've just replaced the battery on your key fob but the issue persists, it's likely that the antenna of your key fob is damaged or inoperable. The antenna is responsible for transmitting signals between the key fob and the receiver module. An OBDII scan can help you identify the issue by revealing what's wrong with your system. The scanner will ask you for details about your vehicle including the model, make, engine type and VIN number.
Faulty Receiver Module
The key fob is equipped with a receiver module that transmits signals to lock and unlock the key fob. The electronic components on the board will stop working if this module develops a problem. If this happens, reprogramming with an OBDII scanner or replacing the key fob itself could aid.
This issue can be caused by a dead battery in the coin-cell or water damage, or signal interference. You can try resetting the on-board computer by disconnecting the 12 volt battery for 15 minutes. This will flush out any residual power that may be causing problems. Take the cable off first of the negative terminal, then the positive terminal. After 15 minutes, connect your battery in reverse order. First positive, then negative second.
Dirt or water can damage the internal chip of the key fob. If your key fob stopped functioning after being soaked, clean it using isopropyl or an electronic cleaner. Then, reinstall the battery. If G28 has stopped working after being exposed to salted or soapy water, it's likely that the chip is damaged and must be replaced.
A defective fuse for the antenna module could also be the reason. This is the fuse that sends an alert to the vehicle to lock or unlock. Based on the model you have the fuse can be found in one of the many locations, such as the engine bay, the side of the dashboard, beneath the rear seat, or in the trunk.
