Key Fob Replacement for the Seat Ibiza
The refreshed fifth-generation Ibiza is an attractive contender in the supermini segment. It is up against the Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Ford Fiesta.
Use a small flat-head screwdriver or a thumbnail (A) to remove the battery compartment cover of the key fob (B). Replace the CR2025 battery, ensuring it is placed in the proper direction.
Dead Coin Battery
A dead battery on a coin is the most common reason of a key fob not locking or unlocking your car. If it fails you will see a decrease in range or no power. It is simple to replace it with a brand new (CR2025) one from your local supermarket. Be aware that faulty or unsuitable batteries can damage the key fob. Make sure the battery you choose to replace is the same size and voltage and has the same specification.
If your fob was exposed to clean water like rain or soapy tap water, it is possible that the electronic chip inside has been damaged by corrosion. You may try cleaning the chip with isopropyl alcohol or an electronic cleaner to check if it works but it is likely that the chip has been fried.
The simplest option is to buy an entirely new key fob. Most major car dealers sell key fobs and they can be installed by a skilled mechanic. They can also be bought online from places like ebay. The best way to work is to work on a flat surface with good lighting. It is much easier to work on small pieces. It also allows you to avoid placing things in the wrong place. Always work on your key fob in an area that is safe and secure.
Water Damage
If your fob's key gets soaked by dropping it in the pool or slipping it in the washing machine you might think that it's lost but there's still hope. The problem starts when the circuit board in the fob comes in contact with water - it creates a fantastic conductor and shorts components. It also accelerates the process of corrosion and rust.
This is a simple fix. Find something absorbent to place inside the fob. A tissue or paper towel will work. Then, use a cotton swab that has been soaked in isopropyl alcohol and wipe down the circuit board and other components to clean out any residue of battery acid and contamination. Let the fob dry out for some time in a dry, warm environment.
Once the fob is dried out, replace the battery with another one of the same size and the same polarity ('+' directed upwards). The fob can be difficult to open in order to access the battery, however should you have a flat-head screwdriver in your toolbox it will be a breeze to insert. After the fob is reassembled, it should work like normal. If it isn't working you may need to re-program it or replace the module.
Radio Interference
When a keyfob operates properly, it broadcasts an audio frequency that is received by a module in your car. If the signal is damaged in some way your key fob will not work properly. This could be due things, weather conditions or other transmitters operating on the same frequency close to your car.
This can cause your key fob not to be able to trigger the vehicle's systems, such as the ignition switch, or the security system. In this case it is best to replace the battery on your key fob.
G28 lighting aftermarket which uses the same frequency as the remote control key fob can interfere with the signal, stopping it from reaching receiver modules. To prevent interference, the LED lighting must be switched off or switched to another frequency.
If the issue persists after installing a new battery, the antenna on your key fob could be damaged or is malfunctioning. This is because the antenna is responsible for transmitting an indication from the key fob to the receiver module. Using an OBDII scanner can aid in identifying the issue by revealing what's wrong with the system. The scanner will request details about the vehicle you own like the model and make along with the engine type and VIN number.
Faulty Receiver Module
The key fob comes with a receiver module that sends signals to lock and unlock the key fob. If the receiver module is damaged and the on-board electronics will stop working. If this is the case then reprogramming the module using an OBDII scanner or replacing the key fob itself may help.
This problem can be caused by a dead coin-cell battery or water damage, or signal interference. Try resetting the on-board computer by disconnecting the 12 volt battery for 15 minutes. This will eliminate any remaining power that could cause issues. Start by removing the cable from the negative terminal first, then the positive terminal. After 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order beginning with positive first, and negative second.
The presence of dirt or water could cause damage to the internal chip of the key fob. If your key's function stopped after getting wet, wipe the electronic component with isopropyl ethanol or an electronics cleaner before installing the battery. If the key stops working after exposure to soapy or salted water, it is likely that the chip has become fried and needs to be replaced.
Another possibility is a damaged antenna module fuse that transmits the lock / unlock signal to the vehicle. Depending on the model the fuse can be located in one of several locations such as the engine bay, to the left of the dashboard, under the rear seat, or trunk.
