Paenibacillus polymyxa is one of the agriculturally important biocontrol agents and plant growth promoting bacterium. This study describes the antifungal potential of P. polymyxa HK4 against an array of fungal phytopathogens and its ability to stimulate seed germination of cumin and groundnut under in vitro conditions. The cumin and groundnut seeds bacterized with HK4 exhibited enhanced germination efficiency in comparison to controls. The use of HK4 as a soil inoculant significantly promoted the shoot length and fresh weight of groundnut plants in pot studies. The draft genome analysis of HK4 revealed the genetic attributes for motility, root colonization, antagonism, phosphate solubilization, siderophore production and production of volatile organic compounds. The bacterium HK4 harnessed several hydrolytic enzymes that may assist its competence in the rhizosphere. The PCR amplification and sequence analysis of the conserved region of the fusA gene amplicon revealed the ability of HK4 to produce fusaricidin. Furthermore, the LC-ESI-MS/MS of crude cell pellet extract of HK4 confirmed the presence of fusaricidin as a major antifungal metabolite. This study demonstrated the potential of HK4 as a biocontrol agent and a plant growth promoter.
To evaluate whether cardiovascular risk, risk awareness, and guideline concordant treatment differ in individuals with versus without epilepsy.

This was a retrospective cross-sectional study using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We included participants ≥18 years for 2013-2018. We classified participants as having epilepsy if reporting ≥1 medication treating seizures. We calculated 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk using the revised pooled cohort equation. We compared unadjusted and adjusted risk for participants with versus without epilepsy. We then assessed hypertension and diabetes disease awareness and control, plus statin guideline-concordance. We assessed mediators for both ASCVD risk and cardiovascular disease awareness.

Of 17,961 participants, 154 (0.9%) had epilepsy. Participants with epilepsy reported poorer diet (p = 0.03), fewer minutes of moderate-vigorous activity per day (p < 0.01), and increased frequency of cardiovascular conditions (e.nd control.

However, emerging reports garnished from use as a recreational drug reveals a potential health hazard. Seizures and neurological consequences have been reported from kratom abuse. Complex pharmacokinetics place patients at further risk of side effects and drug interactions. Still, individuals can legally purchase kratom at stores and through online distributers in capsule form or as teas, powders, and extracts under the veil of a harmless herbal remedy. Without United States Food and Drug Administration oversight, kratom has a high potential for abuse and without regulatory control threatens public safety.
To compare withdrawal of antiseizure medications (ASM) to continued treatment in newly diagnosed individuals achieving seizure freedom, and assess the risk of relapse and factors associated with relapse.

This is a multicenter retrospective cohort study with long-term follow-up. Patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy were identified from the medical records of 13 Italian epilepsy centers and followed up until the most recent visit or death. Seizure-free patients discontinuing treatment were compared to patients who maintained treatment for baseline characteristics. Treatment was stopped upon clinical judgment. The probability of relapse was calculated with the Kaplan-Meier method. Demographic, clinical, and instrumental variables associated with relapse were assessed with Cox proportional hazards models.

One thousand and six patients aged 1 month to 72 years at diagnosis were enrolled and followed up for 17,892 person-years (median follow-up, 9.9 years). Three hundred and twenty patients (31.8%) underwenrelapse is high, particularly in children and patients with idiopathic/cryptogenic epilepsy. Treatment deprescription might be encouraged at least in these patients.
This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the effect of psychiatric comorbidity and neurocognitive deficits on the quality of life in a cohort of patients admitted for Video-EEG Monitoring (VEM) for investigation into a presumed seizure disorder.

Patients were recruited from an inpatient VEM unit between January 2009 and December 2016. All patients had formal neuropsychiatric assessment. All patients completed questionnaires assessing psychiatric symptomatology (SCL-90-R), Anxiety and Depression (HADS), quality of life (QOLIE-89), and cognition (NUCOG).

A total of 451 patients were enrolled. Upon discharge, 204 patients were diagnosed to have epilepsy, 118 psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), and 29 both epilepsy and PNES, while the diagnosis was uncertain diagnosis in 100. Diagnosis (p = .002), HADS Depression score (p < .001), SCL-90-R positive symptoms total (p < .001), and NUCOG total score (p < .001) were found to be significant predictors of QOLIE-89 total scores, together explaiy had similar neuropsychiatric profiles.The emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria requires for the development of new antimicrobial compounds one of which colloidal silver (CS) having strong bactericidal properties and being the most promising inorganic nanoparticles for the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases. However, their production can be slow and cumbersome. Here, we used Corymbia maculata aqueous leaf extract as a reducing agent to synthesize CS in a single 15-minute process. CS was physico-chemically characterized for shape, size, zeta potential and stability. The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Biofilm Eradication Concentration (MBEC) of CS against planktonic and biofilm forms of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA, n = 5), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 5), Haemophilus influenzae (n = 5) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 3) chronic rhinosinusitis clinical isolates were investigated using the microdilution method and resazurin assay, respectively. The in vitro cytotoxicity on bronchial epithelial cells (Nuli-1) was analyzed by the crystal violet proliferation assay. The safety and efficacy of CS was evaluated in an in vivo infection model in Caenorhabditis elegans. CS was spherical in shape with a diameter of between 11-16 nm (TEM analysis) in dried form and 40 nm (NanoSight) in colloidal form and was stable at room temperature and 4 °C for one year. Average MIC and MBEC values varied between 11 and 44 ppm for MRSA, H. influenzae and S. pneumoniae and between 0.2 and 3 ppm for P. aeruginosa. CS was not toxic to Nuli-1 cells or C. elegans at concentrations of 44 ppm and reduced the Colony Forming Units counts by 96.9 % and 99.6 % in C. elegans for MRSA and P. aeruginosa, respectively. In conclusion, a novel, green synthesis of stable CS is demonstrated with good safety and efficacy profiles, particularly against P. aeruginosa in planktonic and biofilm forms. These CS have potential applications against clinical infections, including in the context of CRS.The detection and analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from cancer patients' blood samples present a powerful means to monitor cancer progression. In this work, an antifouling nanostructure substrate made of hydrogel nanoparticles was fabricated for an effective capture of CTCs from the blood samples. The hydrogel nanoparticles were synthesized by zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA), methacrylic acid (MAA) and N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) through a simple polymerization. SBMA could provide an effective antifouling layer for the substrate to prevent nonspecific cell adhesion, MAA could afford active carboxyl groups for the immobilization of antibody to achieve specific CTC capture, and the nanostructured surface could improve the interaction of the target cells with the antibody modified substrate surface to enhance the capture efficiency of CTCs. Moreover, it was not necessary to further modify the antifouling molecules on the hydrogel nanoparticle substrate's surface, reducing the complexity and difficulty of the substrate preparation. The results showed that about 87 % of target cells (MCF-7 cells) were captured on the antibody modified hydrogel nanoparticle substrate. In contrast, the substrate showed little adhesive capacity for the nonspecific cells (K562 cells), and only 0.15 % of cells were captured. And 98 % of the captured cells kept good cell viability. Finally, 1-32 CTCs/mL were detected from the blood samples of five cancer patients, while no CTC was found in five healthy samples. It is envisaged that the new hydrogel nanostructure substrate is capable of capturing CTCs efficiently and specifically from patient blood samples to be used in cancer treatment.Although considerable efforts have been made to vary the alkyl chain length in the quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) for optimizing the antibacterial activity, only few researchers have systematically investigated the combinatory effects of alkyl chain length and another acryl monomers with the different chemical configuration on the antibacterial activity of the modified substrate. In this study, by surface grafting of various copolymeric brushes, different modified cotton substrates were prepared by surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization reaction for exploring the effects of alkyl chain length of QACs and the fluorine content on antibacterial and anti-microbial adhesion characteristics. The quaternized monomers used were prepared by quaternization of 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) with 1-bromooctane (DMAEMA + 8), and 1-bromopropane (DMAEMA + 3). The fluoro-containing monomer was 2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA). Ethyl methacrylate (EMA) was also used for comparison.
