10 Healthy Habits For A Healthy Door Handle Replacement
Door Handle Replacement

Door handles appear to be an insignificant thing however, if you don't like the way they look or are unable to use them, it's worth replacing them. With a bit of patience, you can put in the new handle in no time.

Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates which hide the screws, giving them an attractive look. If your new handle doesn't have them already connected, you'll have to attach them separately.

Remove the handle that was previously used

The door handle is not just a decorative feature for your home it also serves as an element of security that allows you to lock and unlock your door. As time passes, the door handle may begin to lose its grip or feel loose. It may also begin to look old and worn. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace your door handle.

One of the first indications that your door handle is in need of replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a serious issue as you will no longer be capable of locking or unlocking the door which could put you and your family at risk.

Another reason to replace your door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is dangerous, especially for elderly or children members who struggle to open it. They could become trapped. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to fix a broken door handle by simply replacing the old one.

Most modern door handles are standard size and so they will fit on any door. If you're not sure if your new door handle will work, take off the old one and measure the holes in its housing. This will help you to purchase the right size door handle.

The easiest method to take off the door handle you have been using is to take it off of the door. This is typically done with a screw driver. Some door handles have an enclosure plate that hides the screws that mount them. It is necessary to remove it to get to the screws. After you've removed the old handle, make a note of how the spindle is positioned to ensure that you can be sure to align it when you install your new one.

You can also remove the door handle by unscrewing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver for removing the door handle. However, you will have to locate the small latch which is located on the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, take off the handle and the strike plate. Then, remove the latch from the edge of the door.

Remove the Strike Plate

When replacing your handle, you'll want to replace the latch plate, which is the hole that the door's latch hooks into when it closes. upvc door handles will have two latch plates: a rectangular and circular plate (see the above diagram which illustrates the components of a door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, you can replace it with a round one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate and make the handle easier.

The first step is to loosen the screw that is holding the latch plate in place. These screws are often tight, and will require some force to loosen. If possible, it may be beneficial to have another person help with this process.

The latch plate should easily lift itself out of the door after the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move, use a small hammer to scrape the edges. This may help free the plate up.

Now you can move on to making the new door strike plate for installation. With the screws made of wood that were included with your new handles, screw the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws as this could damage the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, close and open the door to determine whether it latches and closes properly. If it doesn't then you'll have to adjust the strike plate up or down, or move it forward or back until the door shuts and latches correctly.

If the door still moves or jiggles, you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too shallow or are not sized correctly for the latch, or from a broken or damaged strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, but with a metal file instead of an hammer and chisel.

Take off the Latch

The latch is a bent metal piece that slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to a hole in the frame of the door to keep the door shut. If your door shakes when you close it, replacing the latch could be all that's needed to fix it.

It's difficult to identify the screws that hold the latch to the door, but there's usually a small hole on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver in order to take it off. After taking off the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch as well as the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle in position.

If the latch isn't easily removed using a paperclip or tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the slot for the latch that is recessed. gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the handle and latch begin to separate. It is possible to repeat this procedure several times before you can remove the latch.

After the old latch is removed, you should be able to slide the new latch into the slot with no issues. Use your new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's properly positioned in the slot, aligned with the screw chambers.

Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the front of the door and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Check that the latch size of the new handle is equal to the measurement.

You'll require a brand new cylinder for your lock if replacing the latch and handle, or your old one is damaged. If you are not changing locks, a new lock should fit in your existing recess, and work with the keys you have already. Be sure to choose the latch with a rectangular cover plate that match the handles you have.

Then remove the Cover Plate

You can replace your old door handles with a modern lever and rose design to improve the look of your house. You can buy complete sets with matching escutcheons, privacy adaptors and escutcheons.

The first step in replacing an internal door handle is to remove the cover plate or rose, which hides the screws and the mechanism within. Use a flathead to remove the plate. It may have an opening along one side or be secured by a pin.

Remove the screw that holds the handle in the interior and put it aside after the cover plate is removed. Remove the screws that secure both the outer and inner plates. You can loosen them with the help of a Philips Screwdriver. Then, remove the inner plates and latch plate from the door and set them aside.

Some doors don't have this gap. If yours does not then you'll have to make a hole in the door to accommodate the new handle. The process for doing this is the same procedure opening a door using a lock, but you'll need to take extra care to avoid damaging the door or frame.

After drilling the holes, you'll need to install new screws for the door knob. Choose the same dimensions as your old screws to ensure that you don't get a handle that is too loose or tight. You'll also have to install an additional strike rod and latch plate, which aren't included with most door handle sets.
