Replacing uPVC Window Handles
Changing upvc window handles is a fairly straightforward task. It is crucial to ensure that the replacement handle fits into the spindle cutout of the window mechanism.
If you follow the steps below the handle of any cockspur will fit on most windows. The height of the step of the handle is crucial.
What to Find
Many of the windows in the UK come with uPVC handles Over time, they can begin to show signs of wear and tear. The handle of the window can become loose or difficult-to-operate when this occurs. Anyone who is comfortable working with basic hand tools can accomplish this fairly simple task.
The first step is to make sure that the handle is securely attached to the frame of the window in its open position. The next step is to locate the fixing pins or screws that hold the handle in the position it is in. They are usually located on the inside face of the handle. They can be removed using a screwdriver or pliers.
When the handle is loose, it can be removed from its hinges by gently pulling it off. It is then necessary to find a replacement handle with the same design and size. This can be done in the DIY store or on the internet. The procedure should take just five minutes and a screwdriver is all you need.
When replacing the handle on a uPVC handle, it is important to take into consideration the step height. This is the distance between the handle's base and the place it sits within the frame of the window. This is a typical measurement and you should check the step height before ordering the replacement handle.
Depending on the kind of handle you choose, there are different sizes available. Inline handles are available for uPVC windows with lug centres of 31mm, while cockspur handles come with lug centres of 43 millimetres. Tilt-and turn handles are typically found on uPVC windows. They feature a unique design that lets the window be slid down to let in air and then turned to fully open the window.
The most frequent breakage in uPVC handles is that they crack internally instead of breaking off from the base section. This makes it difficult to open. It is important to ensure that any replacement handle is fitted with the same spindle as your original one.
Remove the handle that was previously used
Incorrectly installed or damaged window handles can cause double-glazed windows to open and close incorrectly, and can cause them to become stuck. There are a myriad of reasons, such as general wear and tear or the corrosion of the handle. In these situations it is essential to replace the upvc window handle as promptly as you can to prevent further damage or loss of function.
One of the first steps to do when replacing the handles on your windows made of upvc is to remove the old handle from the window. Begin by removing the screw covered with the handle when it is in a closed position. Once you have removed that screw, you can take off the handle. It is possible to make the task easier by using an electronic screwdriver.
It is also worth noting that the screws on the handle could be hidden behind plastic caps, therefore it is recommended to use the Stanley knife to the screw caps and then remove them. After the old handle has been removed, you should then look at the square cut out at the base of the handle to ensure that the new window lock handles will work with it. This is important as you will need to measure the length of the spindle of the old handle to make sure it matches the size of the window mechanism and handle spindle cut out.
The different types of window handles made of upvc are: Espag handles, which have a central screw and will turn left or right; Cranked handles which have two screws and are typically found on tilt and turn windows made of upvc; and Spade handles, that have a flat arm and can be used on either side of the window. It is simple to replace the handle after you have identified one that is suitable. Simply put it in place and make sure the spindle is properly inserted in the lock mechanism. Once you have done this, tighten the handle to the window frame. Your replacement upvc handles should now be secure.
Take a look at the Spindle
If you need to replace a handle made of upvc that has fallen, it's likely that the spindle holding it in place is damaged or is loose. In some instances, it can be fixed using a screw or pin to tighten it. In some cases it is necessary to replace the handle. There are many different kinds of handles made from upvc. There are three types of handles: inline espagnolette cockspur, and tilt-and-turn. Each type of handle is installed and replaced in a different fashion.
It is important to measure the current handle before purchasing a replacement. This will ensure that the new handle is the correct size and fits within the window. All handles are sized in accordance with industry standards, making it easy to determine the right size.
To determine the size of the handle, turn the window to the open position. You should be able to determine the dimensions of the pin or screw that holds the handle. Then take a ruler or tape measure to determine the length of the spindle. Once you have the length of your spindle it is possible to buy a replacement of exactly the same length.
When buying a replacement, it is important to consider the step height of the upvc window handle. The step height is the distance from the bottom of the handle until where it is placed on the frame. In general, this is about 21mm for uPVC windows or 9mm for aluminum. Dropping something in the gap will allow you to see how far the handle extends before it meets an obstruction.
Cockspur handles typically have different backset heights, based on the style of window they're installed in. Inline the espag handle heights range from 43mm from centre to centre (two fixing points). Cockspur handles have different backsets depending on the window they are located in. This is because they feature spurs that extend from the handle and is secured over the cockspur wedge striker plate.
Install the new handle
Once you've selected the new handle, ensure that it is aligned with the holes for screws on the door. Then, secure it with the screws provided. Install the latch lever in similar fashion to the handle on the main handle when you're replacing the door handle. After that, attach the door trim once more to hide the screws for mounting.
Tips: To take the metal head from the wedge made of wood, hold the handle so its broad end rests on the floor. Then use a hammer to tap on the thin end of the handle. Be careful not to damage the handle or the handle spindle.
