How to Replace Door Handles
Door handles are a key element of your home's decor. A new handle can elevate your home's decor and bring your decor up-to-date.
Over time, your door knobs may become stiff, or even break. These are indications that it's time to replace the knobs. This guide will help you pick the right replacement door handle for your home.
Door Knobs
The handles on your doors will enhance the look of your home and make it easier for you to open and close them. They come in a wide range of finishes, colors, and styles to complement your decor. If yours are starting to appear worn or you just want to upgrade, replacing them is relatively simple and can be completed in a few steps.
The first thing to do is locate the shaft or spindle through which the knob is affixed to the door. Some knobs have a tiny opening that can be used with an screwdriver to take out the set screws that hold the handle in place. Some have a small slot or hole that allows you to press a spring-activated detent pin with a flathead. This pin lets go of the latch mechanism and lets you to pull or push the knob.
Once you have the spindle, or shaft, in your hand Remove the knob and replace it. Check that the latch is working properly before tightening the set screws.
After replacing the knob, place the rod for the latch into the hole on the door. Lock it in place using the rod system on the second knob. Ensure that the holes are aligned, then tighten the screws on the latch plate.
Some people opt for the smooth or brushed finish for their door hardware to create an elegant, modern look that is a perfect match for other furniture in their homes. Others prefer a more rustic look which is great for rustic-styled rooms. If you have members of your household who are unable to move, you may be interested in a rim lock or lever knobs for doors that require less pressure to operate.
Other factors are being considered more and more for the design of door handles. Accessibility and control of infections are key considerations in the creation of new handle designs. For instance some handles can be operated with an arm.
Latch
The latch that holds the door handle open may wear out over time. Changing out the old latch to make room for a new handle can be an easy DIY task and will make a significant difference in how your door opens and closes.
Depending on the type of handle you have depending on the type of handle you have, the latch may be part of the knob itself, or it could be an individual piece attached to the door itself. In either situation, the same procedure for removing and reinstalling will apply. Getting the old latch out of its place is quite simple particularly if your door handle is equipped with what's known as a "magic button". This tiny pressure-slot, found on the side knob, is what you will have to press to remove the latch of the handle.
If your handle doesn't have this button, you'll need to remove the cover plates that are placed over the latch plate. These are usually rectangular or circular and can be removed by using a screwdriver to pull them off of the handle. Some have a slot where you can place your screwdriver, whereas others just snap off.
Next, upvc door handle will want to unscrew the two machine screws that secure the latch and the plate to the door handle. You'll need to keep these screws with sharp tips in a safe location in order to reuse them later. Once these are off you can pull the latch plate and mechanism out of the hole in the door and put it away.
Then you can begin to install the new latch. Place the inside of the latch into the hole in the door, and secure it using the hardware provided. Make sure that the square pin in the interior of the latch faces the latching mechanism in the handle and aligns with the screw holes on the other sides of the handle. Then attach the latch's exterior plate with the provided screws.
Strike Plate
It is typical to replace a door handle if it is loose or doesn't lock properly. This is typically caused by misaligned parts in the latching system, for example a striking plate that's either too short or has moved up or downward on the doorjamb as time passes. This project allows you to replace your old strikeplate with a more substantial one, which will offer more security for your door and will keep it closed.
To check if the problem is due to the strike plate, apply some lipstick or similar marking material on the latch bolt. Close the door and try to latch it. If the mark is below the strike plate's hole, it indicates that the plate is too small and the door won't latch. If the mark is above the strike plate hole, it's most likely that the strike plate has been moved up or down the doorjamb.
You might be able to screw the new strikeplate into place over the old one by using the screws supplied with it, depending on the door. It is possible that you will need to first drill holes and then chisel some wood out to ensure a perfect fit. If this is the case, be careful to not chisel out too much wood or you'll damage the integrity of the doorjamb.
Installing a new style box strike plate will provide the lock with a stronger grip on the doors and require more force to open the doors. Typically, it requires two longer screws that anchor the strike plate to the frame of the door. It is necessary remove the previous strike plate, then drill and chisel the wood to make space for the new one.
This hard-to find strike plate is made from solid brass and has an extremely thick. It's specifically designed to be used with antique rim locks. This kit comes with wood screws as well as machine screws, allowing you to select the appropriate hardware to suit your requirements. Make sure to note that wood screws have a sharp tip, whereas the machine screws are more blunt.
