Replacing Your Volkswagen Key
If you lose your Volkswagen key, you'll need to replace it. A new key from the dealer will cost money and you will have to wait for it to arrive.
It may be tempting to buy a second-hand VW keys online or in shops that sell keys. But, they're likely not going to be capable of disarming the car's standard immobiliser system.
Battery Replacement
Modern electronic key fobs provide superior functionality and convenience as compared to manual keys, however they'll still get a charge out or even stop working over time. If your key fob from VW stops responding to button presses or you notice it takes longer than usual to get the lock/unlock buttons to work, it may be an indication that the battery is dwindling and requires replacing.
For this job you'll need the CR2032 battery along with a small screwdriver. Flip open the key by pressing the metal button to locate the battery panel of the key, which is usually located right beneath the Volkswagen logo on the fob. Press up on the panel to release it and then press down the button on the fob of the key again to put the new battery making sure that the positive side is facing downwards.
When you're done, put the key fob remote back together and it should be ready for your next trip around Phoenixville or King of Prussia! If you're looking for additional information on car care at home including how to replace your air filter or tires for your cabin The Suntrup Volkswagen service team is always ready to help. Emergency Key or Bayonet Key
The good news is that even older VW models include an emergency key or bayonet key. They don't require power and can open your car's door or start the engine if you hold it below the ignition.
The disadvantage is that there's no keyless entry or push button start functions. This is why it's important to have an extra Volkswagen key.
If your VW key isn't working it's not due to an inoperative battery. It may be that it needs to be programmed again. It is not necessary to bring your car to the dealer to get this service. A locksmith in the automotive industry can carry out this service.
To program fob car keys it is necessary to have a few things to have at hand. You'll first need to know the year and type Volkswagen key you have. You'll need a copy the registration or title for your vehicle.
These documents can be used to save time when ordering a brand new VW key. You can then take your vehicle to an auto shop to have it programmed. In most cases, it's a fairly simple process that shouldn't last more than an hour. Once the process is completed you'll be able to drive away from your local dealership near Pittsford and Webster with a functional key.
Key Fob Replacement
Modern VWs use key fobs that aren't just keys - they're high-tech anti-theft devices. When volkswagen key programming press the button on your VW keyfob the microchip sends out an encoded code that informs your car it's the correct key to unlock and start. Key fobs have an embedded chip that's used to control features such as remote lock and push button start.
If your Volkswagen key fob isn't functioning properly, it could need a new battery. If this is the case, you can usually tell by the frequency at which you need to press the lock/unlock buttons. If you need to press the lock/unlock buttons repeatedly, it is likely that the battery needs to be replaced.
Another possibility is that the buttons on your Volkswagen key fob have become dislodged or stuck. This is normal since keys are jostled to a great extent. It is fixable by gently tearing the fob apart and then manually altering the buttons.
If the issue is serious then you'll need to bring the key fob into a locksmith and have it replaced. If the key fob you have transponder chips the dealer will need to reprogram the computer in your car to recognize it and this can be expensive. A locksmith in the automotive industry will be able to reprogram your computer and avoid the expense of a visit to a dealer.
Transponder Chip Replacement
The majority of VW's built prior to 1995 have a transponder chip inside their keys. The chip disables the vehicle's standard immobiliser system which prevents it from starting without the correct key. If you've lost it, or it was not working, you'll need a brand new Volkswagen key.
The good news is that a locksmith can make you an entirely new key for your Volkswagen car, irrespective of the kind of key you have (chip, intelligent fob "push to start" remote or regular non-transponder key). If you do not have a spare, they can make you one. But you'll need to bring evidence of ownership for the vehicle (vehicle registration, title certificate etc. ).
Call us immediately if you are far from home and cannot find your Volkswagen key. We'll send a locksmith on the move to unlock your VW door for you, without causing damage to it - thereby saving you a lot of trouble and cash.
Chris was driving his Volkswagen Golf when he got locked out. He contacted the dealer, but was provided with a high price and a long wait, so he decided to give Pop-A Lock an attempt. We provided a quote prior to the time of arrival. Within 20 minutes, a locksmith arrived waiting at his vehicle to begin work. Chris now has a fully functional key with a brand new chip.
